BOH, Marija MARIJA BOH 1942 – 2023 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Mother and Grandmother, Marija Boh on June 12, 2023, at the age of 80 at St. Michael’s Health Centre.
Marija is survived by her devoted son Michael (Caralyn); grandson Luka and granddaughter Mateja Boh; brothers John (Shirley) Boh and Mark (Jennifer) Boh; sisters Magda (Clyde) Kitteringham and Lizzie (Mario) Zorzetti; special nieces and nephews and their families Sandy, Rick, Sheri, Tara, Michelle, Craig, Kimmy, Aaron, Ashley, Matt & Brianne, who loved their Auntie Minnie dearly. She will also be missed by her beloved “Happy Hour” girls Marjorie Gal, Gerri Shankland, Sister Theresa Perro, and Vera Linders; special life-long friends Bonnie Lalonde and Marilyn Withage; as well as her extended family in Slovenija. Marija loved her family greatly.
Marija was predeceased by her parents Ivan and Antonija Boh and nephew Jonathan Boh.
Marija was born on August 28, 1942, in Ljubljana, Slovenija. She was the eldest daughter of five children born to Ivan and Antonija Boh. At the conclusion of the Second World War, the Boh family along with thousands of people fleeing persecution, escaped to Austria. After a clandestine journey from Slovenija and several months staying at a camp in Spittal, Austria, the Boh family together with the Mravlje family and many other Slovenijans boarded trucks to Klagenfurt, Austria in the first leg of their trip to Canada. From there, they traveled by train through Austria to Bremen, Germany before boarding a Cunard White Star ship named “Scythia” across the Atlantic. Eight days later, on April 12, 1949, the family arrived in Halifax. The next four days were spent traveling by train, arriving in Lethbridge on Easter weekend. The family then settled on a farm in Barnwell contributing to the Southern Alberta farming community in the Sugar Beet fields. Eventually, the family moved to Lethbridge in 1958. Marija completed her schooling at St. Joseph’s High School, St. Michael’s School of Nursing and the University of Lethbridge.
Besides her family & friends, Marija’s love was her career. Marija’s professional career as a Registered Nurse spanned nearly sixty years and not only did she serve nearly six decades in this capacity, she did so with an unwavering commitment to her patients and colleagues. She was a healer, teacher and a mentor, which was evident with many health care providers visiting her in her final days to thank her and express their admiration. Marija made lifelong friends working in Eastern Canada, Alberta, Louisiana, and Texas. It was a mere four years ago that her health issues prohibited her from continuing to work full-time at St. Mike’s and where some of her dear colleagues then became her caregivers where she lived up until her passing. In true Marija fashion, she provided medical advice and input about her health right up until the end.
Marija loved her dogs and could always be counted on to save a stray in need. She spent countless hours quilting and scouring catalogues for the perfect pattern and color match as well as serious contemplation on who would be the recipient of such a gift. She loved shopping and always drove a hard bargain. She was an avid participant in the online Tarok community where she competitively teamed up with other aficionados of this ruthless Slovenijan card game. Interruptions to her games were not taken lightly. Marija was an avid traveler and over the years was able to return to Slovenija to visit and connect with family and more recently able to take her grandchildren to her birthplace and share meaningful stories and memories with them while there.
Marija’s family would like to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation to all the health care providers at St. Michael’s Health Centre who went above and beyond to provide Marija exceptional attention and care and allowing her to provide input.

MARTENS, Barbara “Barb” BARBARA “BARB” MARTENS 1932 – 2023 Barb Martens, beloved wife of the late Corne Martens, passed away on June 4th at Adaptacare Cedar Creek Lodge. She was 91.
Barb was a loving Wife, Mom, Gramma, and Great Gramma.
Mom was born at the Galt Hospital in Lethbridge. Her early life took a turn when her Mother (Lillian Baer) died when Mom was 9 days old. Because her father (Herman Baer) could not take care of an infant and Mom’s older brother, Fred, by himself, Mom was lovingly adopted by her Aunt and Uncle Clara and Ray Renfrow. Daddy Herman and Fred were always part of her life, living on a farm not far from where Mom grew up. Herman remarried (Violet) and had 3 children and eventually moved to Chicago but visited Canada often to see Mom.
Clara, Ray and Mom moved into Coaldale from their farm north of town so that Mom could pursue her athletic endeavours through junior and senior high school. Mom was a gifted athlete, participating in track and field, and while in junior high she was asked to play for the senior high school basketball team. Mom continued to enjoy curling, golfing and bowling throughout her life. She also loved to watch the Blue Jays and Edmonton Oilers.
Mom and Dad met while playing in a local band called “The Happy Homesteaders”. They were married on June 5th, 1954, and after a brief attempt at ranching outside of Pincher Creek they made Coaldale their home for the rest of their lives until Mom moved into Adaptacare. Mom’s professional life started at The Bank of Montreal in Coaldale. She then went on to work at CJOC radio, and often filled in as the secretary at Kate Andrews High School after her two children were born. Mom and Dad started the Lost Wax bronze business and together they watched it flourish. She always kept those books balanced.
Mom will be dearly missed by her son Ray (Karen) Martens, granddaughters, Amy (David) Sameshima, and Lindsay Martens (Sebastian). Daughter Barb (Kevin) Viergutz, granddaughter, Kim (David) Ellen and grandson Matthew (Sarah) Viergutz.
Mom was so proud of her kids and grandkids, but the biggest smiles were always for her great granddaughters, Abby, Imogen and Wren Sameshima, Leslie Ellen, Katherine Viergutz, and great grandson Robert Viergutz.
Mom will also be missed by her US family, Marliene Krogstad, Max Baer and Art (Pat) Baer. Mom had many wonderful nieces and nephews, some still with us and some gone, but all much loved.
She is preceded in death by her husband Corne, parents Herman and Lillian Baer and Ray and Clara Renfrow, brother Fred Baer, sister-in-law Netta Baer, and by her most treasured cousin John Harreld.
Mom did not want a funeral. She wanted us to get together and remember all the good times she shared with family and friends.
Barb and Kevin are honoured to host a come and go Celebration of Mom’s life at their home at 1003 19 Avenue, Coaldale between 2pm and 4pm on Saturday, June 17. Mom wanted to be cremated and her ashes spread in a place of beauty. Her family will honour that wish.
When you see a hummingbird, always think of Barb.
Mom’s family would like to thank Sharon, Ruby, and Rachel, and all the staff at Adaptacare who treated not only Mom, but the whole family with such gentleness, respect and professionalism. We would also like to thank Dr. Sam DeWalle for his wonderful care of Mom.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to The Canadian Diabetes Association would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Jake was born in Genk, Belgium and immigrated at a young age to Canada with his family who chose to settle in Coaldale. Jake met the love of his life while they were both working at Sears. Much of Jake’s occupation involved accounting and finances at different hospitals in Southern Alberta.
Jake was a man of many talents and excelled at anything he put his mind to. He loved nature – birdwatching, gardening and tending to his numerous flowers. Other interests were sketching, painting and outings with his children and grandchildren.
In the past few years, a number of health issues had challenged Jake but through them all, he stubbornly fought them; concerned for the wellbeing of his family.
