TASHIRO, Amy (Emiko) Amy (Emiko) Tashiro Dec. 20, 1933 – June 26, 2023 It is with very heavy hearts and a deep sense of loss that we announce the passing of our Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, Aunt, and friend. We know that she is once again with Dad and finally at peace from years of struggling with Alzheimer’s.
Amy was born on December 20, 1933 in Mission, BC to Yoichi and Hatsue Okuma. During the Japanese internment, the family was relocated to Picture Butte, AB and later to Vauxhall, AB where she graduated high school. She practiced Japanese dancing and participated in many concerts and demonstrations during her youth.
Amy married Sami Tashiro on March 17, 1956 in Lethbridge, Alberta and together worked hard to create a successful potato and sugar beet farm in Vauxhall, AB. They created a family with 5 children, which continued to grow as the years progressed.
Amy will be dearly and lovingly missed by her children Kevin (Margarete), Darren, Deanne, Arden (Jill), and Alayne (Leon); grandchildren Shirley (Bob), Jason, Courtney (Danny), Kaden, Treynae; Jenny (Jesse), Shae-Lynn (Christian), Makayla (Mack); Chayce; Jordyn, Logan; nine great grandchildren; and many other relatives, nieces, nephews and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband Sami, parents Hatsue and Yoichi, brother Kaz, and sister Fumi.
Mom and Dad always had beautiful gardens (vegetables, fruit and flowers) that they tended with a passion. She had a love for elephants, reading, doing word search puzzles, and walks (especially with her special dog buddy, Buffy). We were so fortunate that she was a very healthy lady and that her sense of humour and quick wit was next to none. She was the strongest, feistiest woman we knew and kept her sense of humour right up to the end.
Mom and Dad both experienced hardships at very young ages, but with a lot of hard work and determination, created a beautiful life together. We are so proud of them and all that they accomplished. Their perseverance and struggles resulted in a very successful potato and sugar beet business.
They both worked so hard and were never afraid to take some risks and to believe in themselves. Our admiration for them and feeling of pride in everything they accomplished can still be seen everywhere we look.
Thank you Mom and Dad for being such pillars in our lives and for providing such incredible guidance. Your example of working hard and accomplishing goals is truly admirable. We miss you terribly but know that you live on in all of us. Your presence will always be felt all around us.
We would like to thank the incredible staff at AgeCare Jasper Place Long Term Centre. You are all such amazing and special people who work hard at creating a “Home”. Pretty sure Mom would want to hug all of you in appreciation.
Also, a huge thank you to Misericordia Hospital (7th floor – West Wing) for your compassion, empathy and knowledgeable expertise to allow Mom’s last days to have comfort and peace with her dignity intact. We have huge respect and gratitude for all that you do.

Bob was born to Jack and Inez Tomlinson in Ely, Iowa while visiting relatives in the United States. His early years were spent in many places across Canada as his dad worked road construction for Tomlinson Construction. Bob’s school years were spent in Saskatoon and St. Walberg, Saskatchewan. Following his graduation from high school, WWII had already broken out. VONKEMAN, Gerda GERDA VONKEMAN 1937 – 2023 “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” Isaiah 43:2 NIV Mrs. Gerda Vonkeman (née Versteeg), beloved wife of the late Andy Vonkeman, peacefully went on to meet her Saviour at the age of 86 years, on June 28, 2023, while she was surrounded by family.
Gerda is survived by her seven children, to whom she was so grateful for their care and support, especially over the past year: Karen (William) Van der Woerd, Ingrid (Ted) Vander Meulen, Barbara Duursma, Andrew Vonkeman (Eileen Hooper), Les (Jeanette) Vonkeman, Sonya Taekema (George Jenkins), and Erica (Chris) Laliberty. Gerda is lovingly remembered by 35ish grandchildren, foster grandchildren, and Sudanese grandchildren along with their parents (“there’s always room for one more”), and 20 great-grandchildren, many of whom fondly remember Sunday afternoon coffee, speculaas (or vanilla slices if it was a special occasion), and the wicker basket of random toys that would be emptied in the middle of the living room and played with while the adults enjoyed conversation including the ever-present “dutch bingo”. She also leaves behind her family in Holland as well as her in-laws in Canada, and numerous nieces & nephews and their families in Canada and Holland.
She was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Andy; her parents Gerrit and Wilhelmina Versteeg of the Netherlands, several sisters and brothers of Canada and the Netherlands, and numerous in-laws.
Gerda was born on May 7th, 1937, in Barneveld, the Netherlands, the middle child of an eventual 11 children. She often shared stories of her family’s World War II experience, her many enjoyable bicycle trips in Holland, and numerous other memories. She took her nursing training in Holland, and immigrated to Canada in 1962, intending to visit and work for one year before returning to Barneveld. God had other plans, and she met Andy through the Iron Springs Christian Reformed Church. Andy and Gerda married in 1963 and raised seven children on their farm in the Iron Springs area. They retired in 2001 and moved to Lethbridge, enjoying their time together until Andy’s passing in 2006. Gerda remained in their home until 2022 when her health worsened, requiring her to move to St. Therese Villa, where she felt very blessed and appreciative of the care, the friendships, and her room with a view of the courtyard. She found joy in the bike rides, visits from dedicated family and friends, time spent with her table mates, and observing the life around her. Faith in her Lord and the assurance of life everlasting were deeply rooted within her. We take great comfort in knowing she is in His hands.
A Memorial Service will be held in Lethbridge on Monday, July 10, 2023, at 11:00 am at a location yet to be determined, with Pastor Paul Van Stralen officiating.
A private family Burial will be held at 9:30 am the same day at Huntsville Cemetery near Iron Springs, where Andy’s earthly body was laid to rest.
Flowers are graciously declined. Those wishing to honour the memory of Gerda may donate to the Society for Christian Education in Southern Alberta (Donations | Society for Christian Education in Southern Alberta).

ANDERSEN, Nora NORA ANDERSEN 1922 – 2023 Mrs. Nora Andersen of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Mr. John Andersen, passed away peacefully at Adaptacare in Lethbridge on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at the age of 100 years. Nora will be dearly missed by her daughter, Phyllis Hutchinson (Lynden); son, Raymond Andersen (Lynn); as well as her grandchildren, Karen Gilchrist (Keith); Geoffrey Hutchinson (Sarah); Sarah Andersen (Jason); and her great-grandchildren, Orion and Quinn Gilchrist; Mackenzie, Madeleine, and Johanna Hutchinson.
Nora was predeceased by her parents, Olaf and Marie Jensen; John, her husband of 55 years; her youngest daughter, Jean Andersen; and her sister, Paula Ostergard.
Nora was born in Jutland, Denmark, on September 22, 1922, the youngest daughter of Olaf and Marie Jensen. The family immigrated to Canada in March of 1928. They eventually settled on a farm near Rockyford, where Nora enjoyed attending school.
In 1942, she married John Andersen and moved to the Dalum Corner southeast of Drumheller, Alberta – across from the Danish Lutheran Church. There, they worked together for more than 25 years as owner-operators of John’s Corner Service, a farm supply and fuel dealership. Not only was Nora involved in the day-to-day operations of the business, but her excellent cooking also meant that many travelling salesmen made sure they would be at John’s Corner Service for the noon meal.
She and John were instrumental in founding and establishing local schools and classrooms in Drumheller for children with intellectual disabilities. Then, because there was no such accommodation in their local school district, Nora drove Jean to and from school in Drumheller – 21 kilometers away – for all the years of Jean’s schooling.
Nora was a member of the Dalum Friendship Club, a lively group of young women who cooked and served wedding banquets, organized community dances, and put on “talent shows.” When John and Nora became Jeep dealers in the early 60’s, they joined a Calgary Jeep club and spent many weekends with those wonderful friends, exploring the foothills and mountains west of Calgary. When they moved to Airdrie in the late 60’s, they made new friends by joining a square dance club. Nora also worked for Sears in Calgary as well as Metz Real Estate.
In 2006, Nora and Jean moved to Lethbridge. After Nora found a home for Jean at Ruah House, the two of them would enjoy regular outings around town, shopping, eating out, or just relaxing in Nora’s condo. After Jean died, Nora moved to Black Rock Terrace. The caring people at Black Rock Terrace and, later, at Adaptacare, her last home in Lethbridge, helped make her final years comfortable and less lonely.
She will be remembered for her quick wit, love of poetry, home-cooked meals, and dedication to family and community.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Martin Brothers Riverview Chapel, 610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge, with Dr. Bruce Martin, officiating.

BATES, Maxine BATES Maxine Belle Bates (Dee Dee) slipped through the veil on July 5 at age 102.
Maxine was born on November 21, 1920, in Lethbridge, Albera, to Mary Isabelle Lyon and Harry Sylvester McClain, but she was raised by her mother and beloved stepfather, Christian Egger. Maxine was the second of five Egger children and spent her youth on a farm near Carmangay. She, her older sister, and a cousin moved to town and rented a little house to complete high school, where she may have had more fun than schooling (despite being an honor student). In Maxine’s words, “I had such a good time those two years and made great memories.”
In 1939, Maxine eloped with Frank Bates, a seasonal hired hand on her father’s farm. After their marriage, Frank was required to spend the war effort as an employee in the Shaugnessy Coal Mine. Maxine and Frank welcomed five children and raised their family on farms near Carmangay and Vulcan. They later moved to a ranch near Owendale. Maxine and Frank retired to Lethbridge where Frank passed away and Maxine spent the rest of her life. Maxine often called Frank a good man and a handsome man, and she always felt it a tragedy their grandchildren did not have more time with him.
But providence gave their grandchildren another 45 years with Maxine. Despite being a widow for so long, Maxine was never far from family. She was enormously proud of her posterity. She had two daughters, three sons, 21 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren, and 21 great, great grandchildren – a posterity of 95 that spans five generations. As Maxine said a few weeks ago, while looking at a picture of her husband, “We sure started something!” Maxine’s children and grandchildren are equally proud of her, often bragging about their amazing, fashionable, and in all other ways “cool” grandmother.
Maxine loved to travel and to visit her children and grandchildren throughout Canada and around the world. From dancing on cruise ships to stealing boogie boards from grandkids, Maxine made the most of her travels. If she wasn’t traveling, she was often on the phone with her sons or grandsons who loved to call and have long conversations while they drove truck.
Maxine joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as an adult and her lifelong faith in God and Jesus Christ blessed her family.
The family expresses their deep gratitude to the staff of St. Therese Villa for their tender care at the end of Maxine’s life.
Maxine is survived by her sister Marlene Aldoff, her children Carolee (Newell) Jackson, Franklin (Elisa) Bates, Judy (Gordon) Manville, and Darryl (Valerie) Bates; daughter-in-law Kayleen Bates; and her many grandchildren.
Maxine is preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, sisters Connie Stetner and Charlotte Hofarth, brother Raymond Egger, son Danny Joe Bates, grandson Kevin Bates, and granddaughters Rebekah Manville and Allie Elkabir.

Danica was born on October 9, 1923, in the village of Sveta Trojica, Slovenia. She grew up on the family farm that included an inn. She worked in the family’s inn, where from a young age she developed skills of household management. She also worked on the family farm where her lifelong love of nature and the outdoors began. The war in the 1940s resulted in the death of her three brothers and forced the remaining family to flee to Austria where they stayed in various refugee camps for several years. It was at one of these camps where she met her future husband, Ludvik. With the hope of finding new and better opportunities, Danica with her parents and sister immigrated to Canada in 1948 and settled in southern Alberta where they worked as farm labourers. Later, Ludvik joined them, moving from Ontario where he had been working on the railway. In 1950, Danica married Ludvik in St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church. Their children were born and raised in Lethbridge.
Danica cherished her family. Frequent gatherings at the family home included indulging in delicious meals and “pecivo”. Danica enjoyed gardening, both indoors and outdoors. She maintained her yard to perfection right into her early 90s. A personal highlight was when she received a gardening award in 2006.
Her greatest joy was celebrating the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She valued education and lifelong learning. She enjoyed various activities including singing, sewing, swimming, bowling and golf.
Danica’s resilience, perseverance, courage and faith helped her face adversity throughout her life. She will be greatly missed.
The family would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to the staff at Extendicare Fairmont for their compassionate care of Danica during the past two years.

STRELAU, Erika ERIKA STRELAU 1940 – 2023 It is with great sadness that we announce that Erika Strelau passed away on July 6, 2023, at the age of 83, beloved wife to the late Wally Strelau, in Surrey, B.C. She was surrounded by her family, who are comforted knowing that she is now in the presence of Jesus her Saviour.
Erika was born on April 4, 1940, to Ferdinand and Olga Schulz in Waldwerder, Germany. It was difficult times for the Schulz family during and after WWII, as they fled from town to town as war refugees. Due to the generous sponsorship of a Baptist Church in Chilliwack, B.C., the family finally immigrated to Canada in 1953 and settled in Chilliwack. After finishing school and working a few jobs, Erika eventually followed her dream and moved to Vancouver in 1960 where she started her job at Vancouver Fancy Sausage. In 1961, while attending Bethany Baptist Church, Erika met the love of her life, Wally. They were married later that year and were then blessed years later with two children, Glenn, and Colleen.
In 1979 Erika began her new career at Word Communications where she worked 25 years until her retirement in 2004. She was the warehouse manager for the last 5 years of her career. She loved her job and the many wonderful friendships she had there.
Erika and Wally were active members of Bethany Baptist Church their whole lives where they also nurtured many wonderful lifelong friendships. Erika truly enjoyed singing in the Bethany choir for over 35 years. Erika was also involved in women’s ministries and serving as a deacon. She also loved to host gatherings at her home, whether it was for family, friends, or out of town guests, feeding them well with her passion for cooking and baking. Erika was later blessed with four grandchildren that she adored, and she was deeply loved by them all.
In 2010, the family noticed that Erika was showing early signs of dementia, which was then confirmed as Alzheimer’s disease in 2011. After Wally and Erika moved to Elim Village in 2013, her health continued to decline to the point where Erika moved into residential care in 2015. Wally continued to visit Erika several times faithfully and passionately every day, until he passed away in 2020 after a short four-month battle with cancer. Erika continued to receive excellent care from the loving team at Elim Village which our family is truly grateful for.
Erika is predeceased by her loving husband Wally, survived by her son Glenn Strelau (Rhoda), grandchildren Kayla (Travis), Matthew (Kyle) of Surrey, BC, and her daughter Colleen Martin (Dale), grandchildren Will and Jack of Lethbridge, AB, brothers Otto Schulz and Manfred (Wendy) Schulz. Erika is also predeceased by her sister Margaret & (Len) Schmidke and sisters in law Linda Schulz and Joanna Schulz.
A Celebration of Erika’s life will be at 10:30 am on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at BETHANY BAPTIST CHURCH IN RICHMOND, B.C.
