SKRETTING, Allan Allan Skretting
1954 – 2023
Allan Wray Skretting, beloved husband of Ruth Skretting, passed away unexpectedly on his farm west of Enchant on Thursday, July 6, 2023 at the age of 69 years.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the family at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 – 48 Avenue, Taber on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M.
The Funeral Service will be held at the Enchant Community Hall, 121 Center Street, Enchant on Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at 1:00 P.M. Burial to follow at the Enchant Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded by visiting our website at
http://www.southlandfuneral.com.
Besides his wife Ruth Allan is survived by their children Shane Skretting; Shari-Lynne Skretting of Lethbridge and her children Cassidy, Danica and Sienna; Trevor (Rachel) Skretting of Lethbridge; Desaray Skretting (Alex) of Calgary. He is also survived by his mother Ionne Skretting; siblings Muriel (Brent) Golby, Lesley Skretting, Darwin (Sherri) Skretting, Marilyn Skretting and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father Gudmund Skretting, brother Gerald Skretting and sister-in-law Cindy Skretting.
Allan was born on May 5, 1954, the first son of Gudmund and Ionne Skretting. He was raised on the family farm and attended the Enchant and Vauxhall schools. Allan rented land prior to purchasing his own farm four miles north of his parents in 1982, where he resided until his passing.
He was truly a workaholic. Allan’s first priority was his family, he loved his children and had them work hard. He had several mottos and one was, if you weren’t working you weren’t living. Mixed grain farming was his life and he loved it, especially field work and machinery.
Allan worked hard for everything he had, was happy with it and never expected anyone to do a job he wouldn’t do himself. If anyone (family, friends, neighbors, even people he didn’t know) would ask for help, he would drop what he was doing to go help someone else.
Allan’s main focus was mechanics. He generally fixed his own machinery and vehicles. He didn’t believe in getting something new if he could fix what he already had. Allan also built a lot of his own machinery parts.
He believed in keeping everything from the cord off an old coffee pot or toaster, keys from anything that wouldn’t run anymore, the list is endless. It served him well many, many times. Anyone could ask for something and he would say “I think I have one of those.” If he didn’t have it, he would somehow build it.
Like the generation before him, antiques were a wonderful way to spend any free time he may have had. Allan loved and respected all his aunts and uncles and more than enjoyed spending time with them.
Anything to do with hunting was his relaxing fun time. He never went on holidays that might cut into his work time. Allan made many good friends over the years. The two main families in his life were Daryl Wright and family who was like a brother to him, and Kelly Murray and family who became his best buddy, they considered Allan part of the family. He appreciated these two families more than words can say.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Allan’s name may be made directly to a charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements in care of Southland Funeral Chapel, Taber. Telephone: (403) 223-8778.

MACHIELSE, Johannes MACHIELSE It is with heavy hearts that we share that JOHANNES CORNELIUS MACHIELSE of Lethbridge passed away peacefully with family at his side, on Wednesday July 12, 2023 at the remarkable age of 91.
John’s warm smile and tender heart will be dearly missed by his partner, family and countless friends. Dad had a beautiful marriage to Johanna sharing more than 38 years before she passed. He was lucky enough to find love for the second time sharing memories late in life with his partner, Annie.
John leaves six loving children and their partners; Hennie (Wayne), Annelise (Terry), Mary (Bill), Matthew (Jennifer), Cathy (Bob) and John Paul (Stephanie). He was a generous and caring Opa to 13 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, his most important legacy.
Dad took the ultimate leap when he left his birth place and family in the Netherlands for Canada with nothing more than a small suitcase and hope for opportunity as a destination. Ten days on the boat landing at Pier 21, then four days on the train, arriving in Calgary, to start an adventure that would change his life. These first steps set Dad on a path to provide opportunity for four generations now flourishing in his and mom’s chosen country.
He had a remarkable positive view that it will “simply all work out” no matter the challenge. Returning to Holland only long enough to marry his first love Johanna, they both returned to Coaldale, rented their first irrigated farm and immediately started a family. In the next few years he successfully bought his first land, what is now part of his legacy. He would try his hand at all forms of farming, always looking at new technologies and techniques, to support a large family. Some of his proudest moments farming was working beside his kids and especially when the grandkids joined and showed interest in agriculture. He took great pride in being a farmer.
Dad was always focused on living an enjoyable life, not just working. He ensured his family would experience all the spectacular moments travel enables first taking kids tenting, then a motorhome to take family to Disneyland and far reaches of Canada. He gave all his kids and grandkids the thirst for travel and adventure including going back to Holland to maintain strong family relationships that thrive today. He continued to take every opportunity, even in his eighties, with his fabulous partner Annie as they travelled around North America and to Europe to fully enjoy the gift of life.
Dad was always active and began many new passions. Even though he farmed well into his seventies, he went on to volunteer at the Lethbridge South Senior Centre, helping teach computers to seniors, taking photography classes and eventually serving as President of the organization. He had a particular love for working in his shop restoring old cars, tractors, and trucks. His pride and joy was his fully restored 1931 Olds two-door coupe, a close cousin to the very first car he bought when he first came to Canada in 1955.
We want to sincerely thank and recognize all the health professionals including the Palliative Team at St. Michael’s that went above and beyond to ensure Dad could enjoy life in comfort to his final days.
The family will be holding a private memorial service on July 15, 2023.
