DAMPHOUSSE, Louis

DAMPHOUSSE Louis Lucien Damphousse passed away peacefully Thursday, July 6, 2023 in his home. Louis was born and raised in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan on July 20, 1937 to Marie Antoinette (Tony) and Barthalamie Joseph (Bert) Damphousse. He mainly spoke French until he attended Grade One, where he had to quickly learn English. His father had lost his farm to the depression and terrible weather conditions of the “Dirty Thirties,” so he moved to town to become a mechanic. Louis came by his mechanics and tinkering skills honestly through that experience. In high school, Louis worked at an auto salvage yard, where his dad had struck a deal to cover half of Louis’s pay for the first year if the owner would hire him.
After graduating from high school, Louis moved to Lethbridge, Alberta to seek a better life. He worked during the day and took an evening accounting class that prepared him well enough back then to become the bookkeeper for the Town of Brooks. While there, he fell in love with Edna Elaine McKnight, the daughter of the Town Foreman. They married July 12, 1961. They were unable to have children of their own, so they adopted two children (their son Kelly in 1963 and their daughter Denise in 1964). They were also short- and long-term foster parents, with close to 100 kids coming through their home for a few days or more. One foster child (Sharon) lived with them from the age of four until she graduated high school.
Louis moved his family around Alberta every few years, as he got opportunities to serve as secretary treasurer or town manager at increasingly larger municipalities. They were in Didsbury from 1961-1968, Valleyview from 1968-1972, Lac La Biche from 1972-1980, and Fort Macleod from 1980 until Edna’s passing in 1994. Louis soon moved to Lethbridge to be closer to his sister Rita McEwen. They became great golfing buddies in her final years. After Rita passed on, Louis moved to Calgary to be closer to Denise (who was a great helper in Louis’s final years, as his failing hearing and eyesight made life more challenging).
Louis did everything he could to be a good dad to all of his kids. He and Edna scratched out a living together, but always made sure the children had all that they needed and much of what they wanted. He loved to camp, fish, read about history, golf, snowmobile, and “tinker” (as he would call it). In later years, Louis got into wood carving, with birds being his specialty. He had the nicest handwriting and loved to tell stories about growing up in the depression and post-war years in rural Canada.
Louis is survived by his son Kelly (Beth), daughters Denise and Sharon, grandchildren Kayleigh, Kristen, Destiny, Josh, Taylor, and Mitchell, nephew Richard (Cathy), nieces Marilyn (Marlin) and Heather, along with step-grandchildren Brittany, Caylee, Brooklyn, Shaylin, Kyla, and Aleena.
Louis’s memorial service is scheduled for 2 PM on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at the Salvation Army, Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Center, 1731 29th Street SW, Calgary, AB.

JONES, Allan

ALLAN LLOYD JONES 1949 – 2023 Dearly beloved husband to Lynn Jones of Wrentham passed away peacefully on July 13 at St. Michael’s Health Centre in Lethbridge. He is survived by, son Michael (Sandra), daughter Jennifer (Cory) and son Stephen (Jenna, Wyler, Dallin); and three grandchildren Dylan, Hayley and Bryanne; Brother Warren (MaryLee) of Edmonton and sister Laura of Lethbridge; He was predeceased by his mother Marjorie and father John Lloyd of Wrentham.
Born and raised on the family farm west of Wrentham, Allan was the oldest of Marjorie and Lloyd Jones. Destined to be a farmer, he was schooled in Wrentham, Raymond and attended LCC. He returned to the farm and married his high school sweetheart Lynn Williams of Raymond. Together they raised a family and expanded the farm. Allan was very active in the community and chaired many boards around the area serving long tenures with Sunshine Seed Plant, Ridge Reservoir Water Association, Triple ‘W’ Gas Co Op, Wrentham Rec Board and Southern Alberta Rifleman’s Association. He was an avid shooter of pistol, rifle and shotgun and won high overall in the A class last year at New Dayton Rod & Gun Club. He was also the 3rd overall shooter which is impressive considering he was the oldest active shooter. Allan collected old tractors and often drove us wild by leaving them in various states of repair in random locations around the yard. He loved travelling with Lynn when possible. Whether a drive in his Challenger to Fort Benton or Whitefish or on a plane to Phoenix or Mexico in the winter. But at heart he was farmer before all else. He was completely devoted to every aspect of it. He loved farming with his sons and seeing the farm pass on to another generation. He was a very active part of our farm and it will be difficult not having him there to help.
A private family funeral will take place at MARTIN BROTHERS FUNERAL CHAPELS, 610 – 4 STREET SOUTH, Lethbridge, Alberta. With a celebration of life to be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to Canadian Cancer Society or New Dayton Gun Club (e-transfer newdaytongunclub@gmail.com) Cremation has been entrusted to Martin Brothers Riverview Chapel.
