VAN LIERE, Nellie VAN LIERE It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of NELLIE VAN LIERE, beloved wife of John Van Liere, on Sunday, August 13, 2023 when she slipped into eternity at the age of 74 years. Nellie was saved by grace through her faith in Christ Jesus, not by our works, it is a gift of God so that no one can boast. Although our hearts mourn the profound loss of Nellie, we rejoice in knowing that she is at home with her Heavenly Father.
Nellie is remembered for her cheerful smile, infectious laughter, and kind heart.
Nellie was born in 1949 in the small town of Brossele, in Zeeland, the Netherlands. An impactful memory that Nellie had as a little girl was the flood in 1953 where ships almost floated over the dijk by her childhood home.
Nellie leaves behind her loving husband John Van Liere, who shared 55 years of marriage. Nellie married John in 1968 in their hometown of Borselle where they were blessed with two sons. In 1976, John and Nellie immigrated to Coaldale, Alberta, Canada where they were blessed with two more sons. They established roots in Coaldale and lived in the same home for 36 years where Nellie enjoyed hobbies of remodeling and painting their home, and spending many hours gardening her favourite vegetables, especially red beets and carrots. Nellie was very proud of her sons and had a love for dogs; especially the family dogs they had over the years.
Nellie was predeceased by her parents Arjaan and Jo Meeuwse; her sister Marja; her father and mother-in-law Peter and Jane Van Liere; her three sisters-in-law and their husbands: Lenie and Jaap, Marrie and Henk, and Corrie and Huig; as well as her 12-year-old grandson Michael Van Liere.
Nellie is survived by John; her four sons: Peter (Camelia), Adrian, Casey (Edna), and Johnny; brothers Gerald (Annie) and Kees (Marjo); brother-in-law Jake (Hannie); grandchildren: Tim, Christy, Blair, Matthew, Amanda, Naoimi, Travis, and Cameron; great-grandchildren: Aurora, Jordyn, Sutton, Elise, and Lennon; as well as numerous nieces and nephews in the Netherlands and Canada.
Nellie developed health problems and signs of dementia in 2016 which is when she left her family home to be cared for at Sunny South Lodge in Coaldale. Nellie lived in the lodge for seven years where she enjoyed herself, time with many friends (even though she couldn’t remember names), and was cared for by many amazing staff (too many to name), including Dr. Steed.
A Public Visitation will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB on Thursday, August 17, 2023 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
A Funeral Service will be held at TRINITY REFORMED CHURCH, 1100 – 40 Avenue North, Lethbridge, AB on Friday, August 18, 2023 at 12:30 P.M. with Pastor John van Eyk officiating. The Funeral Service will be live-streamed and may be accessed through Nellie’s obituary on the Cornerstone website.
