VEGTER, Albert

VEGTER Albert (Albertus) Vegter of Claresholm, beloved husband of the late Barbara Vegter, passed away peacefully on August 23, with his family by his side.
Albert was born in Holwierde, Netherlands on May 17, 1927. He was the fourth of twelve children. He immigrated to Canada in 1950 at the age of 23.
He met the love of his life at a church picnic in Iron Springs. He and Barb were married in 1954 and were rarely apart for their entire 67 years of marriage.
Together they raised four sons, Charlie (Debbie), Harvey, Arnold (Chiki) and Edward (Melanie). He loved his grandchildren; Angela and Melanie, Landon (Erin), Alyssa (Chris), and Vanessa (Lindsey), Kaitee (Tyler), Scott (Kendra) and Eric (Georgia) and great grandchildren, Janelle, Cole, Deah and Evan, dearly. Albert is also survived by his sister Tina (Marinus) Ekkel and brother Cor (Phyllis) Vegter.
Albert worked for a number of farmers in the Iron Springs and Turin area during his first years in Canada. In 1965, he settled his family in Claresholm and started his career as a baker, eventually opening A & B Bakery. Albert, Barb and the family supplied the community with fresh baked goods for 42 years until he retired at 80 years of age.
Albert’s faith and his love of the Lord was an essential part of his life. He was an active member of the Granum Christian Reformed Church.
Albert had a passion for many activities. He enjoyed camping, boating, bowling and church activities. He also loved to sing and was a member of both the Claresholm Community Choir and the Granum CRC Choir. Later in life, he enjoyed spending time travelling, golfing, swimming and gardening, as well as touring on his motorbike until age 86, with Barb as his passenger.
In 2014, Albert moved to the Willow Creek Continuing Care Centre where he resided until his passing.
Albert’s family would like to thank the staff at the WCCCC for the love and compassion shown to both he and Barb. Many thanks also to Pastor Henry Veldboom for his support, visits and encouragement. Albert rarely forgot a face and would always greet people by name when he saw them and was thankful for the many visits he received from friends and family.
Visitation will be held at 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, August 30th at Zentner Funeral Homes in Claresholm.
A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, August 31st at the Granum Christian Reformed Church
Graveside Service will be at 11:00 am August 31st at the Claresholm Cemetery prior to the service.

CHARLES, Marjorie

MARJORIE CHARLES 1931 – 2023 Mrs. Marjorie Charles of Ponoka, and long-time resident of 10th Avenue N Lethbridge, passed away on Friday, August 25, 2023, at the age of 91 years.
Marjorie was born September 10, 1931, in Peterson, Iowa to Harold and Bernice Kirchner. The family moved to Canada in 1940, first to Tilley, then to Lethbridge.
She is survived by 3 children, Larry (Donna) Charles of Ponoka, Mark (Lina) Charles of Edmonton, and Linda Sakaluk of Sherwood Park; 8 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her twin brother Marvin of Lethbridge and her sister Alta of Kelowna, BC.
Marj was pre-deceased by husband Bernie in 2002 and youngest brother Jerry in 2021.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 pm, on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610, 4 STREET SOUTH, Lethbridge, Alberta.

LEE, Helen

HELEN LEE 1928 – 2023 Mrs. Helen Lee of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Mr. Jack Lee, passed away at Edith Cavell Care Centre on Friday, August 25, 2023, at the age of 94 years.
Helen was born in Lethbridge on November 1, 1928, to parents Way Leong and Ho Shee. She attended school at the Bowman School, completing grade five, and helped her mother with raising her brothers and sisters. In 1949, she married Jack and together they raised 3 sons in Lethbridge. Helen worked for Dominion stores as a cake decorator and then went on to work with Blondie Mihalik at Mikalik’s Grocery on 13th Street North, owned and operated Helen’s Confectionary on 9 Avenue South. She spent the next 15 years with ALCB, retiring in 1990. She was an active member of the Senior Citizens Centre, volunteering to work in the kitchen. She loved to travel with Jack and enjoyed a regimented army trip to Europe in 1995, visiting England, France, Germany, Belgium and Holland. Helen was selfless and always took excellent care of her family, who were number 1 in her life.
Helen is survived by sons Ricky (Flossie) Lee, Terry Lee, Corey Lee; grandchildren Nicole (Patrick Moyer) Lee, Christie (Jeremy) Froese, Lucas (Jairah) Lee, Aidan Karvonen-Lee; sisters Star (Alfred) Stanley, Mae (Richard) Loo, Elaine Chan; brothers David Leong, Robert Leong, Albert Leong and Wayne Leong.
Helen was predeceased by her husband Jack.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm, on Friday, September 1, 2023, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610, 4 STREET SOUTH, Lethbridge, Alberta.
A private family Interment will be held at Mountain View Cemetery.

STENDALL, Gloria

STENDALL GLORIA GRACE STENDALL (née Down) of Milk River, AB, passed away peacefully with family by her side at the Milk River Health Centre, on Friday, August 25, 2023 at the age of 101 years. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter Marilyn (Gerry), son Bob (Laurilee) and daughter Gwen (Don). She was blessed with nine grandchildren, 24 great- grandchildren and ten great- great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
Gloria was predeceased by her husband Gordon, parents Ed and Hattie Down, brother Wes Down, sister Leona (Bob Burgess) and many dear friends.
Gloria was born in Virdon, Manitoba on July 23, 1922. She lived a very full life, with so many good friends and family who loved her dearly. Her memory was incredible and she would share detailed stories about growing up in the 20s and 30s, her first picture show date with Gordon (and his mother), her kids shenanigans growing up, the many dances, parties and celebrations they attended, and what all her grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and children have been up to.
Up until a week ago, she was still known for her beautiful knitting, her Crib playing (she was very tough to beat), her love of puzzles and Bingo, and watching curling on tv (especially watching the 2023 Brier).
Gloria was also known for letting everyone know exactly what she was thinking at all times. Because of this, we have many “Grandma Quotes” to bring a smile to our faces as we remember her fondly.
Her memory will live on as our family will continue to reminisce about her for many years to come.
On July 23, 2024, the family will gather to celebrated her birthday and her life.
We wish to thank Dr. P. Meyer and all the staff at the Milk River Health Centre – Continuing Care, and Prairie Rose Lodge for the wonderful care of our mother.
