ROTH, Anna Anna Roth
July 30, 1933 ~ August 31, 2023
Mrs. Anna Minna Roth, beloved wife of the late James ‘Jim’ Roth, passed away peacefully with family by her side at the Bow Island Health Centre on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at the age of 90 years. Left to cherish Anna’s memory are her three children and their families: daughter, Shelley Cooper and her sons, Nick (Meg Ferguson) Cooper and Carson (Gabby) Cooper; son, Darren (Shelley) Roth and their three children, Brendan (Jessi) Roth (their children Jameson and Sadie), Amanda (Frank) Thompson (their son, Calum) and Kaylene (James) Thiessen (their son, Declan); daughter, Jane (Randy) Kobbert and their two children, Kristin (Brayden Van Driesten) Kobbert and Andrea (Jeff Oudman) Kobbert. Anna is also survived by numerous extended family. She was predeceased by her parents, Eric and Lydia Brown; siblings, Ervin Brown, Elsie Hickey and Ruth McMurdo. Anna was raised and started her schooling in Magrath. She was in her teens when her family moved to Ensign, AB., and she finished her schooling in Brant, AB. Following High School, she continued her education in Edmonton, AB., where she received her teaching certification. Anna’s first teaching position was in Wrentham, AB., where she met her future husband, James Roth. Soon after they were married, Anna and Jim moved to Bow Island where she continued to teach for a short time until starting their family. Having a farm and raising a family kept Anna busy… a good busy that she enjoyed very much! She loved helping with the harvest and continued to do so well into the 1990’s! Anna always put her family first, especially when it came to her grandchildren. She loved her time with them and played an integral role in instilling some of the strong family values that they all share to this day. Anna’s love for puzzling kept her sharp. She also enjoyed spending time in her garden, canning, baking and especially cooking a wonderful meal to bring her family together. The memories of those special gatherings will forever resonate within the hearts of her children and grandchildren. A Private time of remembrance honouring Anna’s life was held at the Bow Island Cemetery on Monday, September 4, 2023. Those wishing to remember Anna may do so through a donation to the Bow Island and District Health Foundation, Bag 3990, Bow Island, Alberta, T0K 0G0. WEST, Vernon Vernon Sinclair West July 23, 1935 – August 30, 2023 VERNON (BUS) WEST passed away at St. Michael’s Health Centre on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, five weeks after his 88th birthday. Bus was predeceased by his wife Laura (Quail), parents Olyve (Brunsdale) and Vernon and brothers Glenroy and Bob. He is survived by sisters Kathy Beck and Donna (Al) Tietz, children Denise, Larry (Laurie) and Nancy (Kirk) and five grandchildren, Emma, Annie, Liam, Maeran and Kiera.
Bus was born in Cardston, Alberta, and was raised on the family ranch in Mountain View, Alberta. He graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1960 and married Laura of Guelph, Ontario, that same year. Bus and Laura lived briefly in Lethbridge and then Cardston where Bus worked as a veterinarian before moving to the ranch in 1969 where he enjoyed years of ranching while raising his family. In 1985, Bus began working for Agriculture Canada as an inspector in Lethbridge and later at the Coutts border crossing.
Bus was many things – a husband, father, grandfather, hard- working farmer and rancher, veterinarian, traveller and cancer survivor. Bus was an avid reader, interested in a range of subjects; there was always a pile of books beside his much-used recliner. He was fond of playing cards and he was having an off day if he lost at cribbage. Bus enjoyed curling and golfing – the latter often accompanied by colorful language – and he enjoyed watching sports, particularly his children and grandchildren’s games.
Bus was a lifelong traveller and took many trips with the Friendship Force, both with Laura and on his own. Bus liked socializing and enjoyed lunch at the Nord-Bridge Seniors Centre and meeting his friends for coffee. We are grateful to the Nord-Bridge staff who were so friendly towards him and also to those friends in his condo building who watched out for him.
The family wishes to thank the staff at both the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge and at St. Michael’s Health Centre for their care and kindness. We are also grateful to family and friends who visited Bus.
A private family service will be held in Mountain View, Alberta.
If one wishes, donations in Bus’ memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Red Cross or to St. Michael’s Health Centre in Lethbridge.
