DEWHIRST, Nora NORA ILENE DEWHIRST 1923 – 2023 Mrs. Nora Dewhirst of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Mr. Walter Dewhirst, passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at the age of 100 years.
Nora was born February 29, 1923, to William and Vira Moore in Camrose Alberta and was the fourth of 10 children. While working in a café in Cochrane, she met Walter Dewhirst who was an Army medic at the prisoner of war camp. They were soon married and in 1945 transferred to Lethbridge where they bought an acreage at Stewart Siding. They raised five children: Judy, Barb, Gordon, a niece Cindy and a nephew Glen. Nora worked hard raising kids, growing and harvesting a large garden and baking bread to sell at the Municipal Hospital where Walter worked.
After Walter’s early death in 1967, Nora found her dream job as a physio assistant at the hospital where she worked for 25 years. After retiring, she and her friend Vella travelled to many European countries and Ireland where she reunited with her Irish family.
Nora is survived by her son Gordon (Lynne) and grandchildren Theresa, Lori, Brenda, Cam, Jenny, Andy, Erin and their families.
She was predeceased by her husband Walter; daughters Judy (AI Desrosiers) and Barbara (Bill McCann); and grandson Troy Desrosiers.
Nora was an Associate of the Sisters of St. John the Divine convent in Toronto since 1972.

SHIPLEY, Arla SHIPLEY ARLA GRACE SHIPLEY passed away peacefully on Sunday September 17, 2023 in the Cardston hospital at the age of 93 years.
Arla was born on July 13th 1930 to Orren Archibald (Archie) Shipley and Lau Wella (Stout) at the family farm in Glenwood Alberta. She was the eldest of 9 children. Arla attended school in Glenwood, graduating in 1949, at which time she moved to Calgary AB and attended SAIT and Henderson Business College graduating with diplomas in dress making, cooking and typing, skills she used throughout her life.
In 1953 she married and, as a Military wife the family moved every 3 years. They lived in Ottawa ON, Iserlohn Germany, Edmonton AB, Petawawa ON. The marriage ended in divorce and in 1967 she moved to Lethbridge AB (to be closer to family) where she raised her 6 Children. Her greatest accomplishment was being a mother to her 4 girls and 2 boys.
Arla was an active member of the LDS Church serving three senior missions: one in Quebec and two at the Salt Lake City Family History Centre. She was the family genealogist and enjoyed teaching others about family research. In her later years she enjoyed serving in the Cardston Temple and volunteering at the Cardston Family History Centre.
Arla is survived by her six children: Richard (LynneMarie) Palmer of Jackson, WY, Maureen Palmer (Gordon Walker) of High River, AB, Wendy Palmer of Lethbridge, AB, Kenneth Palmer of Lethbridge, AB, Karen (Richard) Hansen of Calgary, Marcella (Jason) Lenfesty of Roberts Creek, BC, 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, sisters Louene Prince, Flora Law – Swenson, Violet Anderson and brother Ralph Shipley.
Arla was predeceased by grandson Jeffrey Palmer, parents Archie and Lau Wella Shipley, sisters: Joan Mysyk, Wilma Wood and two brothers: Randy Shipley, Leo Shipley (infant), and her in-laws who were very supportive to her: Harold & Ottilie Palmer.
The family would like to thank her sister in-law and our Aunt Val Shipley, for the many hours she spent taking care of mom when the family could not be there.
Friends may meet the family on Friday, September 29 from 10:00- 10:45 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Temple Street Chapel, Cardston. Funeral to follow at 11:00 am with interment in Glenwood Cemetery.

CHIEF BODY, Lorraine LORRAINE CHIEF BODY 1952-2023 Lorraine Chief Body – “Na’a’to’kaak’oinnimaanaakii” Two Medicine Pipe Woman born October 1, 1952, passed away peacefully at her home in Coalhurst, AB on September 18, 2023, at the age of 70 years. She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
She was predeceased by lifetime partner, Allan Bannon “Papa Al” September 2, 2015; her pet son iitani June 26, 2021; parents Victor & Louise Chief Body. Brothers Guy, Frank, Alfred, Brent (Sherry) and Randy (Sally); sisters; Odile (Eddy), Tini and Rubyann.; Grandparents; Joe & Katie (Nee Wolf Sitting Down) Chief Body, Arthur & Betty Healy, Marie Bumble Bee & William Mills Sr.
Lorraine is survived by her children; Shawn (Carolyn), Cissy (Lee), Stacy, Panda (Dillon), Jack, Jojo; her sibling Jennifer (Dale); Adopted Children: Leonard Long Time Squirrel, Ben Bultsma, Tanya Shot Both Sides, Darwin Shot Both Sides and late Burnie Rabbit, Declan Treleaven, Justin Pointer; Grandsons Tyler (Courtney), Cory (Victoria), Joey, Josh, Sheldon, Desmond (Michel), Costas (Ayla), Fabian (Tosh), Taylor (Shelbe), Cyles (Latisha), Jaimus (Pika), Aidan, Talon; Granddaughters Jessica, Sasha (Payton), Adessa & Tessa; Great Grandkids Rylan Singer, Leela, Brendl, Boston, Jace, Journey, Gilly, Emilee, Lola, Silas, Manaya, Tahlia, Kilo, Giovanni, Ellie, Miles, Anastasia, Annabelle, Darwin Jr and Catalaya.
Lorraine left the reserve at a young age to pursue a career as a Health Care Nurses Aid and worked at St. Mike’s Hospital. She later took a different path, to which she went into counselling and worked for Napi Lodge Treatment Center. Her health pushed her into early retirement, and she then made her home in Coalhurst, AB back in 1987. As the years progressed, she enjoyed the company of her kids, grandkids, great grandkids by watching them all grow up. She enjoyed being at home with her dog “iitani” and doing puzzles but would get away to play bingo, which soon turned to the casino, everyone’s fav hang out, where she was well liked and had many friends, including casino staff members.
In her at home spare time, she was an active Homicide Investigator, as she actively participated in the First 48. She and Papa Al also supervised the grandchildren as they became cigarette machine makers. Cigarette makers, we can all say we’ve witnessed each Grandchild on Grama & Papa Al’s lap, making smokes & drinking coffee.
A Wake Service will be held at 5:00 pm, on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at Lorraine’s residence, 5217 3rd Street Coalhurst, Alberta.
A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm, on Friday, September 29, 2023, at OLD AGENCY HALL, Blood Reserve, Alberta.
Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery.
