TOWNSHEND, Noah Noah Townshend 1988 ~ 2024 It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Noah Townshend on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at the age of 35 years as a result of a tragic accident while dirt biking in Idaho. Noah was a devoted husband to Amanda and an amazing dad to his two daughters, Rylie and Maddy. These three girls were his world! As one may expect, Noah came into this world in a hurry and full throttle! He was born in a speedy delivery in Calgary on June 27, 1988, a son to proud parents, Ivan and Natalie Townshend. He was raised in Nobleford and attended high school in Lethbridge where he graduated from LCI in 2006. It was while at LCI that he took an interest in the automotive course and this interest soon became his passion. At the age of 17, this ambitious young man walked into Dwight’s Place Automotive looking for work experience and was given a chance. This is where he would spend the rest of his life working, honing his skills for the next 18 years! This soon became not only his second home, but his second family. Noah was a hard worker and dedicated employee whose work ethic was unmatched. His efforts were recognized as he became an integral part of the structure of the company he loved to work for. In 2005, Noah met Amanda and the two have been inseparable ever since he won her over with his charm and obnoxious pick-up line! The high school sweethearts were married on September 6, 2008 and from this love, two more girls would be born and steal his heart… Rylie and Maddy. Noah was the life of the party with his uncanny wit and obnoxious, but loveable nature. He was a great friend, a man’s man, who was always willing to lend a helping hand. He had a zest for life and thoroughly enjoyed anything with wheels and a motor. He enjoyed riding his motorbike on road trips with friends and dirt biking with friends and family. He loved the outdoors and spending time making memories with his family which included camping as well as riding in the mountains with his girls in the summer and snowmobiling and snowboarding in the winter. He worked hard… played hard… loved hard! Noah had many great qualities but most of all he was a wonderful family man as a devoted husband and amazing dad who would do anything for his family. Noah will be deeply missed beyond measure by his soulmate and wife, Amanda; his precious girls, Rylie and Madelyn; parents, Ivan and Natalie Townshend; sister, Rachel (Noah) Dodds and their children, James and Katherine; brothers, Dylan (Samantha) Townshend and Ewan Townshend; mother-in-law, Brenda (Barry) Trekofski; father-in-law, Brian Bitz; brother-in-law, Cody (Justine) Bitz and their girls, Amelia and Hannah and his grandfather, Walter Balay. Noah will also be remembered by his mentor and honourary father, Dwight Yanke as well as many close friends and extended family. He was predeceased by his grandmother, Sarah Balay and grandparents, C. Philip and Patricia Townshend.Noah’s life will be honoured at the University Drive Alliance Church, 55 Columbia Blvd. West, Lethbridge on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Murray Jaster officiating. His life will be further celebrated at the Readymade Community Hall, Township Road 90, Cranford, Alberta immediately following the service. MATHESON, Lawrence “Clyde” MATHESON MATHESON, LAWRENCE “CLYDE”, May 29, 1935 – May 22, 2024, passed away peacefully at the age of 88, with his family by his side.
Clyde was born the fifth child of Florence (Osgoode) and Samuel Matheson. He was raised on 5th Avenue A South in Lethbridge, where he and his childhood and life long best friend Tim Myers managed to remodel a few burning barrels with their chemistry set. After graduating from LCI, Clyde, based on some fatherly advice, joined the Canadian Navy “to see the world”. He served in the Navy as a meteorological observer on the east coast at HMCS Shearwater in Nova Scotia and on the HMCS Ontario at Naden, Victoria, BC. He left the Navy in 1956 and transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force, received a commission as a Flying Officer/Navigator and spent 6 years in Greenwood, NS with the 405 Squadron, flying and patrolling the North Atlantic looking for Russian submarines, finding one during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. He left the Air Force in 1963 and enrolled into the University of Alberta. In 1964 he married Dorothy Evans of Fort Macleod and in 1968 he graduated from the U of A with a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and practiced dentistry, firstly in High River but eventually moving back to Lethbridge, and then ultimately retiring in 1997.
Clyde enjoyed the outdoors, hiking the many trails of Waterton, Southern Alberta and Glacier Park while climbing a few mountains along the way. After retiring Clyde and Dorothy, in their Road Trek motorhome, covered most of the highways in the Western United States and Canada. They also travelled to most of the Canadian provinces, especially enjoying Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. They also journeyed into the NWT and the Yukon, taking the Dempster Highway to Inuvik.
Clyde also enjoyed swimming and scuba diving. He dove throughout Canada, on the West Coast in Haida Gwaii, Vancouver Island, as well as chilly Waterton Lake, and Nova Scotia, but especially enjoyed the warm waters of Bermuda, Key West Florida, Grand Cayman, Mexico, and Hawaii. In the winters he skied and played hockey. Clyde was a founding member of the Lethbridge Bonecrusher Oldtimers Hockey Club and enjoyed tournaments across Canada and in Europe with that great group of people, some of them already or having become lifelong friends.
Clyde and Dorothy proudly raised two incredible children, a daughter Leslie and a son Dan. During their younger years Clyde was involved with their activities, the Lethbridge Figure Skating Club and Lethbridge Minor Hockey. As time went on, he especially enjoyed the figure skating, soccer, track & field, softball, and hockey of his grandkids.
Clyde is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy, daughter Leslie of Summerland, BC, son Dan and daughter-in-law Shawna (Klics) of Everett, Washington, and his much-loved grandchildren; granddaughter Macy, attending Medical School at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, granddaughter Bryn, PhD Candidate at University of Calgary in Biomedical Engineering and grandson Blake, playing junior hockey for the Winkler Flyers in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. He is also survived by his brother Sam of Lethbridge, sister Joyce Dziedzic of Lethbridge, his sisters-in-law Eunice David of Lethbridge, and Jackie Evans of Lethbridge, as well as many loved nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents Florence & Samuel Matheson, his brothers Bill (2006) & Bud (1988), sisters-in-law Marjorie Matheson (2004), Margaret Matheson (2023), Elsie Kavel (2020), his brothers-in-law Mike Dziedzic (2005), Ken David (2017), Percy Evans (2018), Bill Kaval (2019), and by a nephew Samuel Matheson (2024).
Clyde lived a full life with grace and a wonderful sense of humour and says his only regret is not getting to see his grandchildren fulfill the promise of exciting futures.
Clyde and Dorothy would like to thank the many caring doctors & nurses who assisted him and especially those at the Jack Ady Cancer Centre, along with those caring individuals in Home Care and Palliative Care.
At Clyde’s request there will be no funeral service. Flowers are gratefully declined. If so desired, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
A gathering for friends & family, in memory of Clyde, will be held in late June. More details will be forthcoming.

CASSIS, Hilda HILDA CASSIS 1935 – 2024 It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Hilda Marie Cassis, beloved wife of Dr. Awny F. Cassis, who passed away peacefully on May 20, 2024, at the age of 89.
Survived by her loving husband, Dr. Awny Cassis; her sister Verna Jennings; her children Irene (Brent Daviduck), Jehan (Ludvik Pahulje), Marie (Francois Arcand) and Nevine (David Matthews); Hilda was the beloved grandmother to Quinn, Kahn and Sefrah Daviduck, Stefan and Mikaela Pahulje, Finley and Nadia Matthews and also cherished by her many nieces and nephews in Canada, Ireland, England and Egypt.
She was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Bridget Johnston, and her siblings Reginald Johnston, Muriel O’Loughlin, Kenneth Johnston, and Trevor Johnston.
Hilda was born in Dublin, Ireland to Henry and Bridget Johnston on February 17, 1935. The third oldest of six children in an Irish Catholic family, faith was a central part of her life, often with a rosary in hand and Irish Gaelic prayers in her heart.
Her many passions in life included theatre, song, dance, and athletics. From the famous Abbey Theatre to the tennis courts of Glasnevin, she relished activity, especially tennis. Never one to drive, she loved long walks and bicycling. For adventure, she enjoyed travels to Italy, Germany, and England.
Hilda attended Parnell Technical School for Office Administration in Dublin where eventually her sister Verna introduced her to a handsome scholar and international student from Egypt, attending Trinity College. His name was Awny Cassis and that encounter forever changed the course of her life.
After a 6-month engagement to Awny, she packed her bags and sailed off by herself to get married in Cairo. She quickly adapted to the culture, the language, and the cuisine, as Mama Marie (Awny’s mother) happily welcomed her. Hilda often spoke of how graciously she was welcomed and loved by the Cassis family who were impressed with her proficiency in languages including Arabic.
In Egypt, Hilda was an Assistant English Teacher at St. George’s Boys School, combining her love of children and teaching and soon became mother to Irene and Jehan.
The next chapter of her life came 7 years later when the crossroads of war and opportunity led them to a new country, Canada, where Lethbridge, Alberta would become their new home. Landing in January 1968, in a massive snow blizzard, the shock from hot to freezing cold; from the metropolis of Cairo to the then small city of Lethbridge and its surrounding foothills would leave a lasting impression.
While Awny worked at the University of Lethbridge, Hilda worked selflessly at raising her daughters and soon welcomed the birth of Marie (Lethbridge) and Nevine (Dublin), while on sabbatical leave.
Hilda was known for her amazing cooking and exceptional desserts. From delicious meals for family and friends to entertaining University functions, her homemade pastries, Irish trifle, shortbread, Irish soda bread as well as her Egyptian meals and desserts were sought after.
Always a Dubliner at heart, she’d have the kettle on to share a “cuppa” tea with friends and family. Her persuading, radiant smile and twinkling blue eyes made all feel welcome! Always perceptive and willing to lend a hand whenever needed, she offered support, wisdom, and love in abundance. She cared deeply and it showed.
An avid knitter, sewer, and gardener, she created gorgeous Aran sweaters, sewed dresses and Irish dancing costumes for her girls with meticulous precision, and grew amazing flowers reminiscent of Ireland.
One of her greatest joys was watching her daughters on stage performing in many Irish dancing competitions (Feis). She enjoyed socials with the Irish community, providing fond reminders of her roots.
Despite facing serious illness, she defied all expectations with the loving and trusting guidance of her husband Awny (her primary caregiver) and support from her family. Always one to find the silver lining and face her fears and ailments with optimism, she found strength through her faith in God.
To commemorate Hilda’s life and our cherished memories, a Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 PM, Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 STREET SOUTH, Lethbridge, Alberta.
A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CHURCH, 2405 – 12 AVENUE SOUTH, Lethbridge, followed by a burial service at MOUNTAIN VIEW CEMETERY 1210 SCENIC DRIVE SOUTH, Lethbridge.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your choice of charity.
