BURGESS, Curtis BURGESS Curtis Cleveland Burgess of Calgary, formerly of Lethbridge, passed July 13th, 2024, at Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary Alberta after a long illness. The youngest of four children, he was born in Lethbridge Alberta on October 10th, 1957, to Helen Burgess and Leo Cleveland Burgess. As a young man Curtis developed a life-long love for football which he demonstrated on the field at Catholic Central High School and off the field as an avid fan. Curtis was predeceased by parents, Helen and Leo, his brother Leo J Burgess, sister Helen Diana Burgess, and long-time partner Elizabeth Mazar. He is survived by sons Jeffrey Burgess, Jason Mazar, and Christopher (Jodi) Mazar, sister Lorraine (Hans) Vanderfluit, grandchildren Mia, Josh, and Noah along with many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at Mountain View Cemetery in Lethbridge the morning of October 12th, 2024 at ten o’clock.
DAY, Peter PETER THOMAS DAY Born 28 January 1948 in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England, passed away peacefully on 7 October 2024 in Lethbridge, Alberta, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Peter is survived by his four children, Michael, Matthew, Steve (Amy), and Emily Day. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Fragile X Foundation of Canada.

HUGHES, David HUGHES, David William March 14, 1936 – October 3, 2024 Dr. David William Hughes of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at the age of 88 years.
David had a wonderful life with his wife of almost 67 years, Shirley, and their children. He was born on March 14, 1936, and was raised in Calgary, moving to Lethbridge with Shirley in 1960 where their three children were born and raised. The move to Lethbridge occurred when he obtained his Chartered Accountant designation. He joined a new canola field processing company as the chief accountant and through various promotions, he became President and CEO in 1976. David and Shirley moved back to Calgary in 2021.
He is survived by his children, Brenda Hughes with her husband Jim Duggan, and their son Ryan; Gail and Trevor Lamb with their two sons, Dean and Troy (Brie); along with Michael and Maxine Hughes and their daughter Rachel; his brother Murray Hughes, sister-in-law Catherine Hughes, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Shirley in March 2024, his parents, Doug and Ruby Hughes; father and mother-in-law, William and Evelyn Thompson; his sister Shirley, brother Don, sisters-in-law, Shirley, Norah, and Gladys; brothers-in-law, Bill, Gordon, and Wilhelm (Bill); and nephew William (Bill) Thompson. David took great joy in being called “Paga” by Dean and Troy.
David was active in both industry and community affairs. He was a leader in the canola industry through his involvement with Canola Crushers of Western Canada, the Canola Council of Canada, and the Institute of Edible Oils Field. He served as Vice President of the International Association of Seed Crushers and as Canada’s representative on that association’s Consultative Committee. He also served as a Corporate Director for several companies.
David believed that “To whom much has been given, much is expected.” Many local organizations were the beneficiary of his active involvement, including the University of Lethbridge, the Family YMCA, the Kinsmen Club, the Rotary Club, St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, and the United Way. David and Shirley created an endowment fund at the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta for the benefit of charitable organizations that focused on the development of youth leadership or enriching the lives of young people.
In recognition of his service, David was honoured several times, including being named a Fellow of the Institution of Chartered Accountants of Alberta, with a commemorative medal on the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada and the Centennial Medal in recognition of outstanding service to the people of Alberta. His contribution to the University of Lethbridge on behalf of the Faculty of Management, the Board of Governors for two terms was honoured by awarding him the honourary degree Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. He was the first honoree at the University of Lethbridge Faculty of Management Scholarship Dinner.

POPOVITCH, Anne ANNE POPOVITCH 1932 – 2024 Anne Popovitch of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Fred Popovitch, passed away peacefully, after a short illness, at Chinook Regional Hospital on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at the age of 92.
Anne was born in Lethbridge to Tony and Katherine Palychuk in 1932. She married her soulmate, Fred, in July of 1952 and remained happily and lovingly married to Fred until his passing in 2017.
Anne was always a loving, hard-working lady, both at home and in the workplace, where she exceptionally maintained her office management and bookkeeping skills until her retirement at the age of 70. We are especially going to miss “Anne’s Bakery”, as Mom continued her passion of feeding her family and baking bread and goodies until early summer of this year.
Anne was predeceased by her father, Tony Palychuk, mother, Katherine Palychuk, brother, Vic Palychuk and sister, Florence Wilson.
Anne is survived by her loving son and daughter, David Popovitch and Michelle Sinclair (Joe), her cherished granddaughter, Jasmine Sinclair and her “adopted daughter”, Dannielle Skelding. She is also survived by her sister, Vickie Ford, along with numerous adored nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews and her grand-cat-babies.
As per Anne’s wishes there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Anne’s name to an animal rescue of your choice.
Thank you to the nurses, doctors and staff on floor 5A at Chinook Regional Hospital for the wonderful care and attention provided to our mother.

MCTAVISH, Marilee MARILEE MCTAVISH 1948 – 2024 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of MARILEE ALYCEN MCTAVISH, beloved wife of the late Peter McTavish, at home on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at the age of 76 years.
Marilee was born in High River, Alberta on October 4, 1948. When she was 9 years old, she moved from the farm east of Coutts to the family ranch west of Fort Macleod and completed her schooling there. She married Peter McTavish on June 10, 1967, and welcomed their son Michael in 1971. She worked as a nursing aide at various senior’s homes in her younger years living in Fort Macleod but calling Lethbridge home for the past 20+ years. Marilee was a farm girl at heart and was an avid animal lover with a particular fondness for dogs and horses. She was a caring, compassionate and loving person and will be greatly missed. Marilee recently celebrated her 76th birthday on Friday October 4th.
She is survived by her son Michael (Gwen) McTavish and their children Sierra and Tanner; brother Leonard (Marlene) McCulloch; sisters in-law Marg, Bebe and Ann McCulloch; numerous nieces and nephews and their families; special friend Larry Olauson and her loving dog Clyde.
Besides her loving husband Peter, she was predeceased by her parents Ivy Waters and Alexander McCulloch and brothers Jim, Stan, Ernie, and Howard.
A private Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

VAN DEURZEN, Antonius “Tony” VAN DEURZEN ANTONIUS “TONY” VAN DEURZEN passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital, with his family by his side, on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at the age of 86 years.
Tony is survived by his brothers: Gerard (Jean) and Frank (Marlene) of Lethbridge; and his sister Wija of Holland; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
He was predeceased by his parents, Antonius and Huberta; his brothers: John, Joe, Cor and Albert; and his sisters, Tonnie and Mary.
Tony was 15 years old when he immigrated with his family to Canada in 1953. He held a number of jobs in the first years in Canada, and among them, he was an apprentice mechanic for two years and a taxi driver part-time. He completed his B.Sc. Degree in 1971 and continued his studies at the U of A, to obtain a Masters of Science in Agriculture Economics. He was an Agriculture Production Economist and also farmed with his brothers near Tyrell Lake.
At Tony’s request, no funeral service will be held. Green Burial has been entrusted to Cornerstone Funeral Home. Tony will privately be remembered by his family and friends.

PENNEY, Anthony “Tony” PENNEY March 16, 1986 – October 4, 2024 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of ANTHONY “TONY” PENNEY on Friday, October 4, 2024, at the age of 38 years. Tony was a loving husband, son, brother (in-law), uncle and friend who touched the lives of many with his kindness, sense of humor, and hardworking spirit.
Tony is survived by his wife, Brandi Penney; his parents, Betty and Terry Penney; his brother, Dan Penney; and his in-laws, Gordon Freimark and Geraldine Boser and family.
He was predeceased by his grandparents, David and Evelyn Martin, and Ralph and Rita Penney, and his close friend, Ossie.
Born to Betty and Terry Penney, Tony was a man of quiet strength and generosity. He was a devoted husband to his wife Brandi, with whom he shared many adventures. From proposing in Paris, to camping and quading in the mountains, Tony lived life to the fullest. He also adored his loyal dog, Sadie, who was always by his side.
Tony worked as a truck driver, oilfield swamper, carpenter, and custom harvester. He was known for his strong work ethic and quick sense of humor.
He was a kind and thoughtful man, always putting others first. Tony was quiet, but his actions spoke volumes-whether through small gestures of generosity, listening to others, or making people smile with his humor. His friends and family will deeply miss his presence.
A Celebration to honour Tony’s life and share memories will be held at the COAST LETHBRIDGE HOTEL & CONFERENCE CENTRE, 526 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB, on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at 3:00 P.M. with Pat Siedlecki officiating.
