BROWER We are saddened to announce the passing of our son, Richard Glenn Brower, on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. He passed away unexpectedly after a very short illness. He is survived by his parents, Wes and Elaine Brower; sister, Dawn; brother, Brandon; niece, Kayleigh Congdon; nephew, Travis Congdon; and great nephew, Kamdyn Congdon as well as many relatives and friends. There will be a Celebration of Richard’s Life on Friday, November 1, 2024, from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm at the Danish Canadian Club (727 – 11 Avenue SW, Calgary, AB).

HUGHES, David

HUGHES, David William March 14, 1936 – October 3, 2024 Dr. David William Hughes of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at the age of 88 years.
David had a wonderful life with his wife of almost 67 years, Shirley, and their children. He was born on March 14, 1936, and was raised in Calgary, moving to Lethbridge with Shirley in 1960 where their three children were born and raised. The move to Lethbridge occurred when he obtained his Chartered Accountant designation. He joined a new canola field processing company as the chief accountant and through various promotions, he became President and CEO in 1976. David and Shirley moved back to Calgary in 2021.
He is survived by his children, Brenda Hughes with her husband Jim Duggan, and their son Ryan; Gail and Trevor Lamb with their two sons, Dean and Troy (Brie); along with Michael and Maxine Hughes and their daughter Rachel; his brother Murray Hughes, sister-in-law Catherine Hughes, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Shirley in March 2024, his parents, Doug and Ruby Hughes; father and mother-in-law, William and Evelyn Thompson; his sister Shirley, brother Don, sisters-in-law, Shirley, Norah, and Gladys; brothers-in-law, Bill, Gordon, and Wilhelm (Bill); and nephew William (Bill) Thompson. David took great joy in being called “Paga” by Dean and Troy.
David was active in both industry and community affairs. He was a leader in the canola industry through his involvement with Canola Crushers of Western Canada, the Canola Council of Canada, and the Institute of Edible Oils Field. He served as Vice President of the International Association of Seed Crushers and as Canada’s representative on that association’s Consultative Committee. He also served as a Corporate Director for several companies.
David believed that “To whom much has been given, much is expected.” Many local organizations were the beneficiary of his active involvement, including the University of Lethbridge, the Family YMCA, the Kinsmen Club, the Rotary Club, St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, and the United Way. David and Shirley created an endowment fund at the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta for the benefit of charitable organizations that focused on the development of youth leadership or enriching the lives of young people.
In recognition of his service, David was honoured several times, including being named a Fellow of the Institution of Chartered Accountants of Alberta, with a commemorative medal on the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada and the Centennial Medal in recognition of outstanding service to the people of Alberta. His contribution to the University of Lethbridge on behalf of the Faculty of Management, the Board of Governors for two terms was honoured by awarding him the honourary degree Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. He was the first honoree at the University of Lethbridge Faculty of Management Scholarship Dinner.

MCTAVISH, Marilee

MARILEE MCTAVISH 1948 – 2024 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of MARILEE ALYCEN MCTAVISH, beloved wife of the late Peter McTavish, at home on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at the age of 76 years.
Marilee was born in High River, Alberta on October 4, 1948. When she was 9 years old, she moved from the farm east of Coutts to the family ranch west of Fort Macleod and completed her schooling there. She married Peter McTavish on June 10, 1967, and welcomed their son Michael in 1971. She worked as a nursing aide at various senior’s homes in her younger years living in Fort Macleod but calling Lethbridge home for the past 20+ years. Marilee was a farm girl at heart and was an avid animal lover with a particular fondness for dogs and horses. She was a caring, compassionate and loving person and will be greatly missed. Marilee recently celebrated her 76th birthday on Friday October 4th.
She is survived by her son Michael (Gwen) McTavish and their children Sierra and Tanner; brother Leonard (Marlene) McCulloch; sisters in-law Marg, Bebe and Ann McCulloch; numerous nieces and nephews and their families; special friend Larry Olauson and her loving dog Clyde.
Besides her loving husband Peter, she was predeceased by her parents Ivy Waters and Alexander McCulloch and brothers Jim, Stan, Ernie, and Howard.
A private Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Mary Lowen March 17, 1957 ~ October 4, 2024 It is with deepest sorrow the family of Mary Renate Lowen, beloved life partner of Garry Fandrick, announce her sudden passing in Hays, AB., on Friday, October 4, 2024, at the age of 67 years. Along with Garry, Mary said farewell to her children: daughter, Brandi (Phil) and their sons, Triton and Lincoln; son, Brandon (Kelsi) and their daughters, River and Skylar; extended family; Garry’s daughter, Lynn (Derrick) and their two children, Brittney (Makay) and Bryden (Avy); as well as Garry’s son, Cody. Along with the above heart broken family, Mary leaves her sister, Jeannie (Ron) and their daughter, Chelsey (Dave). She was predeceased by her parents, Gerhard and Renate Kuessner. Mary was a kind hearted, amazing lady who worked her entire career at Vauxhall Meats for 40+ years. She was the heart and soul of the meat shop and worked alongside Garry to make the business a huge success in the community until their retirement and sale of the company in 2022. Mary was known for her amazing work ethic and great attention to detail. She wasn’t defined by her work as she was so much more than that… she was a wonderful human being to anyone who was lucky enough to have known her. Mary will be missed greatly and loved forever and ever. Thank you for all the beautiful memories. WIEBE, John “Johnny”

JOHN WIEBE 1946 – 2024 John (“Johnny”) Clayton Wiebe passed away peacefully on October 8th, 2024, at the Coaldale Health Centre in Coaldale, AB. John was well known for his personal and professional generosity and for his enduring support of Coaldale’s community events and the development of the town.
Born in Chilliwack, BC in 1946, John grew up in Coaldale where he was raised on the family farm with his siblings Vernon (“Vern”), Edwin (“Tex”), Wesley (“Wes”), Ernest (“Ernie”), Richard and Charlotte by their parents Jacob (“Jake”) and Justina (“Jessie”) Wiebe. After attending Lethbridge College, John engaged in a variety of professional pursuits over the years including becoming a diving coach and a land surveyor.
In 1983, John took over the Coaldale Meat Market where he had worked for Myron Rak as a teenager. After a few years, John rebranded his business as Wiebe Sausage Works, which he owned and operated for decades to come. The company’s reputation for trustworthiness and quality spread far and wide based largely on the popularity of John’s original Mennonite Sausage, but also on his endearing personality, friendly demeanour, and unique sense of humour.
John enjoyed fishing, taking walks by the Oldman River, watching the Lethbridge Hurricanes play hockey, riding the Harley Davidson he won from the annual Kinsmen Harley Raffle, tending to his yard and garden, filling up a Christmas hamper for the Coaldale Food Bank every year, cooking and baking at home, and making countless occasions special and memorable for his immediate and extended family. He was passionate about, collected, and spent untold hours listening to music. He also played guitar and bass guitar in a variety of local groups. He passed this love of music on to his children.
Those left to cherish John’s memory include his wife and life partner Patricia Wiebe; his children: Lynsey (and Robin Duda), Marshal (and Carolina Diaz Romero), and Melissa (and Micheal Ostrom); and his grandchildren, whom he loved dearly: Evelyn, Samuel, and Sophia Rose.
When John sold Wiebe Sausage Works in 2015, he donated many historic items from his butcher shop to the Gem of the West Museum where he gained an honorary lifetime membership. These items are currently on display and will be available for viewing at John’s Celebration of Life. This Celebration will take place on Wednesday, October 16th at the Gem of the West Museum, located at 1306, 20th Street, in Coaldale, AB. Family, friends and the public are welcome to come-and-go anytime between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Refreshments, light snacks and some of John’s favourite home-baked desserts will be served.
John sat on the board of the Birds of Prey for over twenty years and believed in the value of organization’s mission. In lieu of cards or flowers, donations can be made in John’s memory to Coaldale’s Birds of Prey at the following link: burrowingowl.com. A bird will be released in John’s honour at the Birds of Prey in the Spring of 2025.

POPOVITCH, Anne

ANNE POPOVITCH 1932 – 2024 Anne Popovitch of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Fred Popovitch, passed away peacefully, after a short illness, at Chinook Regional Hospital on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at the age of 92.
Anne was born in Lethbridge to Tony and Katherine Palychuk in 1932. She married her soulmate, Fred, in July of 1952 and remained happily and lovingly married to Fred until his passing in 2017.
Anne was always a loving, hard-working lady, both at home and in the workplace, where she exceptionally maintained her office management and bookkeeping skills until her retirement at the age of 70. We are especially going to miss “Anne’s Bakery”, as Mom continued her passion of feeding her family and baking bread and goodies until early summer of this year.
Anne was predeceased by her father, Tony Palychuk, mother, Katherine Palychuk, brother, Vic Palychuk and sister, Florence Wilson.
Anne is survived by her loving son and daughter, David Popovitch and Michelle Sinclair (Joe), her cherished granddaughter, Jasmine Sinclair and her “adopted daughter”, Dannielle Skelding. She is also survived by her sister, Vickie Ford, along with numerous adored nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews and her grand-cat-babies.
As per Anne’s wishes there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Anne’s name to an animal rescue of your choice.

VAN DEURZEN, Antonius “Tony”

VAN DEURZEN ANTONIUS “TONY” VAN DEURZEN passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital, with his family by his side, on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at the age of 86 years.
Tony is survived by his brothers: Gerard (Jean) and Frank (Marlene) of Lethbridge; and his sister Wija of Holland; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
He was predeceased by his parents, Antonius and Huberta; his brothers: John, Joe, Cor and Albert; and his sisters, Tonnie and Mary.
Tony was 15 years old when he immigrated with his family to Canada in 1953. He held a number of jobs in the first years in Canada, and among them, he was an apprentice mechanic for two years and a taxi driver part-time. He completed his B.Sc. Degree in 1971 and continued his studies at the U of A, to obtain a Masters of Science in Agriculture Economics. He was an Agriculture Production Economist and also farmed with his brothers near Tyrell Lake.
At Tony’s request, no funeral service will be held. Green Burial has been entrusted to Cornerstone Funeral Home. Tony will privately be remembered by his family and friends.

HANSEN, Victor

HANSEN 1930 – 2024 MR. VICTOR HANSEN, of Lethbridge, beloved husband of the late Darlene “Dolly” Hansen, passed away peacefully with family by his side, at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at the age of 93 years.
Victor is survived by his children: Reg (Marianne), Tami (Richard), and Liana; and grandchildren: Haley (Justin), Travis, Jessica (Andrew), Dylan (Jacky), Cortni, Devan, Brittney (Russ), Mackenzie (Matt), and Lyndsi (Pete); and 10 great- grandchildren. He is also survived by sister, Sue Toupitch.
Besides his loving wife, Darlene (nee Renning), he was predeceased by his parents, Harald and Gunda Hansen; brothers: Thorlief, Harry and Robert; and sisters, Helen and Lillian.
Victor was born on his parents farm in Kingman, Alberta on November 25, 1930. Shortly after, the family moved 200 kilometres north to a farm in Noral – south-west of Lac La Biche – where Victor became proficient at hunting, fishing, horseback riding and farm work. After seasonal work in logging camps, Victor worked construction at Travers Reservoir in southern Alberta, where he met Darlene – the love of his life. Darlene and Victor were married in August 1954, and moved to B.C. where they raised their family. Work triggered many moves throughout the province often to remote locations. Victor was a valued grader operator and was assigned more difficult tasks building road ways to wildfire look-out towers and truck run-away lanes throughout mountainous regions. He advanced to Superintendent for Emil Anderson Construction and completed projects in B.C. and Alberta for over 30 years.
After retiring from construction, he and Darlene took over the Renning family farm in the County of Barons. The farm operation was based on grain production, a small cattle operation and raising and showing llamas, which they thoroughly enjoyed. Victor supplemented farm income as a crop loss adjuster for Agriculture Financial Services Corporation where his honesty, attention to detail and friendly demeanor was appreciated by both farmers and the insurance corporation. Throughout his life, Victor appreciated the value of learning. He was a skilled mechanic and welder, successfully taking on farm projects others would not attempt while broadened his self-taught experiences with formal courses. His patience, strong character, good humour and pragmatic problem-solving skills earned respect from others.
Victor and Darlene spent a great deal of time developing their farm yard, gardens and out buildings. Their home was a happy family destination on many special occasions, holidays, weddings, and often expanding to social gatherings for community and friends. Victor and Darlene moved from the farm into Lethbridge where they resided for several years acquiring new friends and maintaining old ones through groups such as the Sons of Norway.
We will hold your hand forever Dad.
At Victor’s request, no Funeral Service will be held. Cremation entrusted to Cornerstone Funeral Home. A celebration of Victor’s life will be held at a later date.

GRAY, Robert “Bob”

ROBERT “BOB” GRAY 1935 – 2024 Mr. Robert John “Bob” Gray of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at St. Michael’s Health Centre on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at the age of 88 years.
Bob was born on December 19, 1935 in Lethbridge, AB to William and Bertha Gray. He grew up on the family farm east of Carmangay with his older siblings Peggy and Jim. He spent most of his life farming with brother Jim and family. Bob met a special friend, Jenny Skinner in 1980 and accepted her family into his life. In 2003 when Bob’s eyesight failed, and he could no longer drive, he moved into Lethbridge. He walked many miles around Lethbridge, enjoyed his audio books and tended to his yard. Bob lived in his own house until December 2023.
He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Denise (Wayne) Cronkhite, Dwight Gray, Darrell Gray, Pat (Earl) Koch, Richard (Melodie) Vasselin, Deb (Wayne) Mathieu and their families. He is also survived by Jenny’s daughters, Bev Hynes (Brent Hamilton), Sharon (Cyril) Hubbard, Debbie (Dave) McGee and their families.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, William and Bertha Gray; sister Peggy Vasselin; brother Jim Gray; brother-in-law Lawrence Vasselin; sister-in-law Helen Gray and Dwight’s wife Sheila Going. He was also predeceased by his special friend, Jenny Skinner and her son-in-law Ross Hynes.

UPTON, Paul

PAUL UPTON 1939 – 2024 It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Stanley Upton (beloved husband of Vlasta Theresa (Kubik)) on Saturday, October 5th, 2024, at the age of 85. Paul took his last breath and closed his eyes for the final time with his family by his side.
Paul was born on February 4th, 1939 at the Grace hospital in Calgary Alberta, to Blanche Amy Juliette (Quesnot) and Delbert Kramer Upton. He grew up in a small war time home with his parents and two younger sisters Carol and Marie.
Paul attended the University of Alberta to study modern languages, where he met the love of his life Vlasta, at an Ides of March party, who was also a student at the U of A. Paul completed his undergraduate degree, as well as his master’s degree at the U of A.
Paul and Vlasta were married on October 12th, 1963, in Lethbridge. It was a calm, sunny, warm, beautiful fall day filled with stunning color and love. Paul adored his “Vlast” and was one week shy of celebrating his 62nd wedding anniversary with her.
Paul and Vlasta lived in London, England for a few years where Paul pursued his PhD (modern British novelists), but also developed a passion for Astrology and the Zodiac, frequenting a tiny little bookstore to nourish this new passion. While living in London, they spent a great deal of time exploring and travelling around Europe as well, with one of the most talked about spots being the South of Spain and the coast of Majorca.
Paul was a professor of English at the University of Lethbridge for 33 years. He was hired in 1964 by Kate Andrews in a dingy little bar over a couple of cigarettes and a glass of scotch, and began his teaching career at the University while it was still at the Lethbridge Community College. Paul had a very meaningful and successful career as a professor where his true passion was teaching – sharing what he loved and making special connections with staff and the thousands of students he got to teach. Paul was awarded the very first Distinguished Teaching Award at the University of Lethbridge in 1987.
Paul (and Vlasta) had their daughter, Vanessa Theresa, in 1970 and in 1972, their son Ivan Christopher. Together, Paul and Vlasta spent 54 years building a beautiful warm and loving home in which they created all of the special, fond and lasting memories we will now have, to hold on to today, so he can continue to live within us. Paul also had a son in law Jordan Craig Valgardson (2008) and together Jordan and Vanessa have two beautiful daughters Marisol Lucia (2009) and Mirabel Josette (2011) that Paul not only was extremely proud of but that he adored more than anything. Paul loved and cherished his little family (which he always said was his greatest accomplishment in life) and he worked hard right until the very end to care for all of us.
Paul was an incredible, passionate man who loved to laugh and tell stories. All or nothing. His wisdom, sense of humour, patience, caring, strength, understanding, integrity, compassion, intelligence and wit, insight and intuition, brutal honesty and unwavering unconditional love for all of us, and of course his never ending support will truly be missed.
I (Vanessa) was never the reader my dad was and no where near as brilliant, but I can proudly say I share the same love and passion for good literature and language and words that he did… There was nothing he loved more than to revel in the beauty and strong emotion that just the right combination of words and sounds could bring or create – “those words in that order” as my dad always used to say – a professor of the English language to his very core.
Years ago when I was teaching LA 6 I came across this novel that neither of us had ever heard of but that was very intriguing at first glance. I asked my dad to read it first to then tell me if I would like it and to my surprise- he did! A couple of hours later he called me back to say yes I would like it – in fact, probably love it, and as always he was right!
Although this novel is filled with such interesting imagery and rich word play we finally agreed that THIS excerpt was our very favourite part of the whole book – as educators, as language lovers, as parents, and as human beings – bringing us both to happy tears.

There will be no funeral or service for Paul. He hated the thought of a funeral. His wishes were cremation and to keep things as simple as possible, which was almost a family motto.
Instead of a memorial service, or sending flowers, planting trees, or donating money to a cause, we would simply please LOVE to know your fondest memory of Paul.
A message, from you, about him. A note, an email, a text, a photograph, a video – anything – that shares who you are, how you knew Paul, and a story or blurb about your fondest memory of him, or what you liked most about him, or something along those lines. I am hoping to create a special collection for my daughters (and Ivan and my mom and I) who are going to miss him dearly.
