DOBIE, Dorothy “Dot” DOBIE It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy “Dot” Louisa Dobie on December 24, 2024 in Sylvan Lake, Alberta at 81 years old.
Born in Birkenhead, United Kingdom, Dot moved to Canada in 1975. Before this move and the birth of her three children, Dot practiced nursing. Later on in life, Dot dedicated herself to her company called “Help Estate”. She had a passion for helping individuals and families in moments of transition, providing guidance on the distribution of assets and management of estates. Dot had a strong love for the communities she was a part of including Lethbridge, Waterton, and Sylvan Lake and was always willing to lend a hand to serve them in whatever way she could.
Traveling was also a love of Dot’s. Experiencing different places and the memories that came along with them was important to her along with her love of antiques. Above all, Dot’s greatest joy was her family. As a devoted grandma she adored spending time with her grandchildren, who were the light of her life.
Dot is survived by her children Kate (Ed), Jane (Andy), and Guy; grandchildren Eric and Owen; brother Bob (Jackie); nieces Jenn and Alison; her partner Richard “Ricky” Lucy; and stepson Alisdair.
She is predeceased by her parents Mary Agnes and Sidney.
A Celebration of Dot’s life will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 1:00PM at the Sylvan Lake Funeral Home Chapel in Sylvan Lake, Alberta with light refreshments to follow.
In lieu of other tributes, donations can be made to Ronald McDonald House Charities.

BALL, Lily LILY BALL 1944 – 2025 Lily Theresa Ball, our wonderful mother, loving grandmother and cherished sister, left us suddenly, unexpectedly and sadly on January 2, 2025, just 16 days before her 81st birthday.
Born in Nelson, B.C., Lil came to Lethbridge in childhood and graduated from St. Joseph’s High. She went on to spend several years working in retail and never lost her love for shopping. Lil met and married her ‘Kenny’ and began a journey together that would last for 57 years, until his passing in 2021. Together they raised their family, shared many laughs at hockey and baseball games, and found friendships that would span decades.
Lil knew her way around a kitchen, whether cooking or baking, everyone knew the results would be delicious. She never tired of listening to Elvis and enjoyed many family camping trips across Alberta and often into Montana.
But above all else, Lil loved to have her family around her. They are left to mourn her untimely passing.
Lil will forever remain in the hearts, minds and fond memories of her sister Judy (Chris) of Kelowna; daughter Debbie (Steve) Gergely of Lethbridge: son Shawn (Kelly) Ball of Ottawa; granddaughters Kayla (Ryan) Shand of Calgary; Ella Ball, Ottawa; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Lil’s Life will be held in June.
“Penquin Down” one last time.

VERES, Fred FRED VERES 1932 – 2025 Fred was born at the Lethbridge Galt Hospital in 1932 to a very nice Slovakian couple, who would later make excellent grandparents. Fred, his brother John, and their dad cleared a homestead near Wimborne, Alberta. This is a hamlet famous for its one stop sign that no one paid any attention to. Fred worked hard and did very well at school, eventually graduating with honors from Olds College. Fred ran a farm and then worked in the oil patch as a water truck driver. For relaxation, he played baseball – his team even won a provincial championship.
Fred married Patricia Wonnacott, a young lady from Banff, who always had a smile for him. They worked together on the farm and had a son that dad named Joe.
Dad was always there, quietly observing and playing catch with me. After he retired from the rig, dad showed his support for my higher education by relocating so I could attend university, as well as continuing to spend time in shared hobbies like golf.
Dad was a huge supporter of Nord-Bridge Seniors Centre and the activities they offered. Dad was a kind and thoughtful man, who was easy to make friends with. Dad volunteered and helped several charities over the years. He moved into Legacy Lodge and enjoyed playing bingo.
Fred is survived by Patricia, his wife of 54 years, son Joe, daughter-in-law Jorica, and their amazing daughter Brooklynne. If you were a friend of Fred Veres, please think of honoring him with a donation to either the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta or the Nord-Bridge Seniors Centre.
A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 pm, on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at Royal View Cemetery, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Dr. Bruce Martin officiating.
