WIRZBA, Bernard “Bernie” BERNARD “BERNIE” WIRZBA 1959 – 2025 Bernard (Bernie) Wirzba, beloved husband of Cecilia Nicolas, passed away unexpectedly at home in Lethbridge, Alberta on Friday, January 31, 2025, at the age of 65.
Bernie was born to Emil and Margaret (Strecker) Wirzba on June 24, 1959, in Lethbridge, Alberta. The second of five children, he grew up in Lethbridge. In his youth he enjoyed many outdoor activities, especially hiking trips to the mountains. From a young age he started working for the family business, Wirzba Bros Construction, during the summer months.
After high school he attended the University of Lethbridge, graduating in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He worked for the family business for a while until he decided he was ready to go back to school. He attended Law School at the University of Alberta and received a Bachelor of Law (L.L.B) degree in 1986. He then worked at a law firm in Lethbridge for about two years and was admitted to the Bar in 1988. However, he did not see practicing law as a good fit for his life.
He again returned to work for the family construction company for several years. After some time, he decided to follow his passions of photography and computers. In 1996 he enrolled in the Multimedia Program at the Lethbridge Community College. He graduated in 1998 and started working at the University of Lethbridge as an intern student. He stayed on at the University for the next 25 years.
Bernie very much enjoyed his work at the University. He held a variety of positions, including as videographer, the official University photographer, and various roles in the Teaching Centre. He loved his colleagues whom he considered his family. Bernie retired from the University in 2024.
Bernie met the love of his life Cecilia in 2018. They were married on his 60th birthday in June 2019. They loved each other and had a wonderful life together. They made and shared videos of the two of them cooking and enjoying exotic meals. They liked traveling, going to the Philippines twice, and to Waterton countless times. They enjoyed gardening and working together on their property.
He was predeceased by his parents, Emil and Margaret.
Besides his wife Cecilia, he is survived by his siblings: Dan (Sharon), Carl (Héléne), Marvin (Tanell), and Lorraine, as well as nieces and nephews: Steve (Jessica), Johannah (Emily), Grace, Kevin (Heidi), Zachary, and Andrew.

FLEMING, Norah FLEMING “It’s amazing, Molly. The love inside, you take it with you.” – Sam (Patrick Swayze), Ghost (1990) NORAH ANNE TERESA FLEMING, passed away, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, February 16, 2025 at the age of 76 years.
She was born on October 26, 1948, to Eileen Hart in Tillsonburg, ON, and was soon adopted by her loving parents, Teresa and Victor Jacobsen in Lethbridge, where she lived her entire life.
Throughout her life, Norah was known for her beauty, sense of humour, and her unique energy. She had a passion for golfing and spent many years at Henderson Lake Golf Club, winning tournaments and breaking all the rules with her short shorts and sparkly visors. She looked for opportunities to make people laugh, to be silly, and to express herself with fashion. “Everything comes back, honey.”
Norah touched the lives of many throughout her years of selling insurance for SunLife, her dedication to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, her years at Boutique of Leathers and her belief that children are precious. As a single mother, she found success late in life and loved having her daughters and their friends over to “watch something good”. She was a goofball at heart, yet tenacious in her will to make a good life for herself and her daughters.
Later in life, illness, injuries and pain crept in and Norah’s focus became living with and numbing the hurt. As her light slowly dimmed, she dreamed of “getting better”. This is not the first time a beautiful, beloved mother descended into addiction and pain that defined the way she lived her final years. She was so grateful for help, connection, chocolate, love you’s, and of course, television. It is comforting to know that until her last moments, Norah was making jokes and laughing out loud, and her lipstick was on.
She is survived by her daughters: Jenn (Bleu) Fleming-Baker and Kara Fleming; her granddaughters: Mackenzie (Laly), Bayleigh (Rylan) and Wynter and Sylver Baker; as well as her great-granddaughter, Amellia Visser. She spent over 30 years with her partner, Brian Strain, and is also survived by his two daughters, Lila (Tyler) and Heather; and grandchildren, Laren and Hudson. She is also survived by her brothers, Bill Jacobsen and Normand Massicotte; and her sister, Claire (Laurelie) Jacobsen.
Norah will forever be remembered for her singing, her love of movies, her comedic faces, accents and sayings (I must say), and the boogies (pressing her cheek into yours) that were given freely to those she loved. May her hilarious and loving spirit shine a light on us all.
A Celebration of Norah’s life will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB, on Monday, February 24, 2025 at 1:00 P.M. with Sharon Hagel officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Solid Outreach (solidvictoria.org)
