Aldia is survived by her children Lance (Kathie) McCauley of Monte Creek, British Columbia, Scott (Pat Baker) McCauley of High River, Shaunna (Trevor Satchwill) McCauley of Breton and Jason (Karen) McCauley of High River. She was a loving grandmother to Brent, Tyson, Sidney, Chase, Quintin, Cooper, Collette, Riley and Reid and a proud great grandmother to Saoirse.
She was predeceased by her parents Olga and George Labreque and brother Ernie Labreque.
Aldia was born in Richard, Saskatchewan on July 1, 1940. She was two years into her nurse’s training at the Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton when she met the love of her life, Bill McCauley whom she married on St. Patrick’s Day 1962. Aldia and Bill had four children, Lance and Scott (twins), Shaunna and Jason. Aldia and Bill resided in Edmonton for a number of years until they moved to Calgary then to Black Diamond. There, they worked together as owner/operators of the Texaco gas station and later another Texaco station in Canmore before moving to Hinton to own/operate the Petrocan Service Center. While in Hinton, Aldia obtained her administrative assistant diploma. They were lured back to southern Alberta to be closer to family, moving to Lethbridge, then Taber where Aldia worked as the cosmetic manager for Johnson’s Drugs. After Bill passed away in 1995, Aldia moved back to Lethbridge and worked at Fine Designs China until her retirement. She was a fantastic saleswoman, even selling several gift items to someone while shopping for herself at The Bay. After her retirement, she settled in Coalhurst where she remained for the last twenty three years of her life. Aldia loved connecting with people, hearing their stories and making those around her feel welcome. She had a great sense of humour and as one grandchild remembers “you could razz her and she’d never get offended”. Aldia cared deeply about her family and if anyone showed the slightest signs of illness she was right there, doting on them until they were cured. With the exception of snakes, mom loved all animals and always had several pets, including Gabby, her large livestock guardian dog. During her retirement she was an active volunteer at the Lethbridge Therapeutic Riding Association as well as the Lethbridge Humane Society. Aldia had an eye for beauty and expressed it through her keen sense of fashion and decorating her home. Bill was often a “victim”, during his late night trips to the bathroom, running into furniture that Aldia had rearranged to make the house look better. Her love and laughter will forever remain in our hearts.
If friends and family so desire, memorial tributes in Aldia’s name can be made directly to The Cats Sass Rescue, P.O. Box 398, 100 51 Avenue, Coalhurst, Alberta T0V 0V0 (www.catssassrescue.com).
A special thank you to the staff at the High River General Hospital for their compassion and care with Aldia during her last days.
Arrangements in care of Southland Funeral Chapel, Taber. Telephone: (403) 223-8778.
