RUSSELL, Duke Duke Russell 1930 – 2025 With all of the feels we said goodbye to our father, “Super Duke” on Friday, May 9, 2025 at the age of 95 years.
Duncan Aaron Russell was born on February 11, 1930 in Elma, Manitoba to Jack and Evelyn Russell. Duke grew up in Flin Flon, Manitoba where he met and married the love of his life Phyllis Ann Simpson. They were blessed with four children, two sons David and Douglas, and two daughters Andrea and Jennifer. Duke, with his family in tow, travelled across Canada managing several Woolworth stores. In 1975 Duke decided to be his own boss, purchasing the Stedmans franchise in Taber. Duke’s retail philosophy was, “You can’t sell it if you don’t have it!” so Stedmans sold absolutely everything! Duke was an incredibly hard working man and when his store closed, he did not retire but went on to be employed by the Taber Sugar Factory. In times of leisure, you could find him outside enjoying nature and life’s simple pleasures like feeding the birds, admiring the sunrise, sunset or a good storm roll in. Duke was passionate about fishing, hunting, boating, swimming, and enjoying the outdoors with his family and many close friends including Barry and Rob. Some of his favourite locations were the family cabin in Flin Flon, the CWR Boat Club, Chin Lake and his own backyard. His quick pace, walking his fluffy dog Taylor, his active lifestyle and his knee replacement at ninety kept him
happy and healthy. Viral encephalitis changed Duke’s independence but not his zest for life. He liked caramel sundaes, watching the river, listening to birds and spotting deer at the Taber Provincial Park. Duke loved drives around the community while reminiscing.
Linden View became Duke’s home where he enjoyed sunshine on the patio deck, strolling the halls, walking the loop of the surrounding park, bingo, armchair travels, get fit, crafts, monthly birthday parties, door decorating contests and listening to piano music. Duke always prided himself in being well dressed, clean shaven and smelling great, but the best thing that Duke ever wore was his brilliant smile. That ear to ear grin, along with his warm, gentle spirit is sure to be missed. The welcoming staff and other residents that quickly became his friends, filled his last year with wonderful memories, only enhancing a life well lived.
Duke is survived by his children Dave (Charlyne) Russell of Lethbridge, Doug (Ethel) Russell of Lethbridge, Andrea Hertz (Alex Thomson) of Coaldale and Jennifer (Rick) Latham of Lethbridge; grandchildren Chanell (Tanner), David (Melissa), Michael, Mandy (Matt), Karly (Wyat), Ryan (Kayla), Kenzie (Jesse), Raegan and Kinley and many great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife Phyllis, grandson Darrell, great grandson Aiden, brother Dave and sister Betty Ann.
In respecting our father’s final wishes, we will be taking Dad’s ashes to Flin Flon, where he will be buried on the island right alongside our Mother’s. Condolences may be forwarded by visiting our website at
http://www.southlandfuneral.com.
Our family is immensely thankful to the Linden View staff, as well as the doctors and nurses at the Taber Hospital.

MARJORIEELIZABETHPOMMEN(NEERUD Marjorie Elizabeth Pommen (nee Rudolf) January 13, 1957 – May 11, 2025 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Marjorie Elizabeth Pommen, who passed away peacefully in Vegreville, Alberta on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at the age of 68 years.
A Celebration of Marjorie’s Life and Memorial will be held on Sunday, July 13, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Taber Legion Park. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend and share their memories.
Marjorie is survived by her devoted husband, Allen Pommen; her children, Bradley (Amy) Pommen of Nelson, BC, and their daughters, Abigail and Stella; Kimberley (Tyson) Christiansen of Shaughnessy, Alberta, and their children, Thomas and Jessica. She is also lovingly remembered by her siblings: Anna (Richard) Ferguson, Chester (Jeanne) Rudolf, Richard Rudolf, Sue (Keith) Shirakawa, and Larry (Tracy) Rudolf; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth and Chester Rudolf Sr.
Marjorie was born on January 13, 1957, in Taber, Alberta, and raised on the family farm alongside her five siblings. She grew up attending the Catholic Church in Taber, where she developed a deep sense of compassion, community, and faith that would guide her throughout her life.
She enjoyed going for walks, camping, bingo, blackjack, and reading. Her favorite movie was Pretty Woman, and her favorite flowers were carnations – simple, classic, and quietly beautiful, just like her. Despite a long battle with multiple sclerosis (MS), Marjorie remained a true fighter. While the illness impacted her life progressively over time, she continued to maintain a high quality of life, offering friendship and care to others who also lived with MS. Her perseverance, warmth, and sense of friendship left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Marjorie’s name may be made to the “Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada” at
https://mssociety.ca, in recognition of her generous and compassionate spirit.

Brad was loved by many, family, friends, and co-workers. He is survived by his father Bruce (Bev) Campbell, his step-sister Julie, and nephew Kaydince and mother Betty Green of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

WOODGATE, Ernie “Woody” ERNIE (WOODY) WOODGATE With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Ernie “Woody” Woodgate on March 18, 2025. A man of grit, hard work, and fierce loyalty, he left an unforgettable mark on everyone who knew him.
Ernie was a devoted husband to Marie Woodgate, always looking out for her – even when she swore she didn’t need looking after. He was a flower giver, a caretaker, and a man as stubborn as he was hardworking.
Woody spent his life moving oil rigs, most loyally with Speedy Heavy Hauling, and he took great pride in his work. His strong will and sharp tongue were trademarks, and he was never afraid to let a few well-placed words fly. But behind that rough exterior was a man who loved deeply and unconditionally.
Ernie was a proud father to his daughters: Angela Woodgate, Teena Peterson, Claudette Woodgate (Joel Dinel), Nadine Sharman (Cole Sharman), and Lauretta Woodgate. He was also a caring stepfather to Steven Perks (Rhonda Perks), Jeannie-Rae Kuno (Tim Kuno), and Jim-Bob Perks (Tracy Rowe). His legacy lives on through his many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who adored their “Papa-Woody.”
Woody was not a drinker, but he loved a good visit. He valued time spent with family and friends, sharing stories, laughter, and the occasional well-timed expletive.
A celebration of Ernie’s life will be held on Saturday May 24 at 2:30pm at the Coaldale United Church. In his honor, bring a story, a smile, and maybe even a bouquet – because if there’s one thing he taught us, it’s that flowers were meant to be given.
Rest easy, Woody. You worked hard. You loved harder. And you will be missed the hardest.

SINCLAIR, Warren SINCLAIR Warren Neil Sinclair of Turin, AB passed away April 16, 2025 at the age of 87.
Predeceased are parents Gordon and Helen, and eldest brother Marvin.
Surviving family are Larry (Marguerite), Kari (Mark) McAndrew, Greg (Sonia), Kristy (Tom) Adams, many great nieces and nephews, Aunt Lucy P., Uncle Andy T., and many cousins.
Warren was a humble and quiet man filled with kindness and compassion for people and critters. He loved looking after the birds and rescuing all types of Gods creatures from certain death. For him that meant capture and release. Sometimes driving them to safety across the river.
Warren was a great Uncle whom children gravitated to. He would always be helping us put our latest craft or Lego set together, playing crib or tenting out in the backyard with his great nephews. A favourite memory of ours is steering his old red Toyota truck down a dirt road. On our family trip to Hawaii, our uncle joined us on a long walk and hike up the Diamond Head crater in Hawaii. He also joined us on a road trip from Calgary to California to watch the Breeders Cup horse races.
Warren’s interests included nature, science, entomology, zoology, forestry, history, travel and golf.
A special thank you to Warrens close neighbours for their friendship and kindness, stepping up to help him out. He never wanted to be a burden to anyone.
Warren’s kind gentle spirit and warm smile will be missed.

DEMPSEY, Pauline Pauline Sylvia Dempsey (Gladstone) Apsui-kayaki – White Mink Woman
June 18, 1929 – May 10, 2025
It is with great sadness that we say farewell to a remarkable woman. Pauline Dempsey nee Gladstone passed away on May 10, 2025 at the age of 95 years in Okotoks, Alberta. Her granddaughter Alyssa Koski was by her side as she passed peacefully with a picture of her grandfather Joe Healy (Potaina) above her and Randy Travis music playing. Pauline had a wonderfully full life, and approached everything she did with generosity, grace and humour. She could make anyone smile with her fabulous wit, and moved through life with stylish flair.
She will be greeted in Heaven by her beloved husband Hugh Dempsey, daughter Lois Dempsey, son James Dempsey, father Senator James Gladstone, mother Janie Gladstone nee Healy, her grandfather Joe Healy (who was the kindest, gentlest man she knew, whose spirit watched over her in life), grandmother Topitkani; all her aunts and uncles, especially her aunt Suzette (who she was very close with); brothers Fred and Horace Gladstone; sisters Lucy Swite and Nora Baldwin; adopted brother Harold Healy; niece June Willms and nephew Jim Gladstone; and good friends Irene Tailfeathers, Eve Yellow Old Woman, and Jean Healy.
She will be forever missed by her children Louise Dempsey (Joe), John Dempsey (Ronna), and Leah Koski (Shane); grandchildren Loni, Justin, Ayla, Shawna, Jessica, Alyssa, Collin, Spencer (Patricia), Sharon, Shane, Jack, and Layla Dempsey; great grandchildren Shantelle (Jacob), Aliyah, Carter, Dominic, and James; and great, great grandchild Chihiro.
She will also be missed by her nieces and nephews Caen, Jeff, Alexis, Rosie Jane, Brenda (Melvin), Rowena (Smokey), niece/godchild Bernice (Scott), nephew/godchild Neal (Shareen), Grant (Pat), Chey (Nancy), and Susan (David); her other godchildren Ilona Weasel Moccasin, Heather Foster, and Shane Breaker; as well as many great nieces and great nephews.
Pauline is survived by her sister Doreen Garvey nee Gladstone (likiinohko’mi), who turned 100 years old on March 23, 2025.
Pauline grew up on the Blood Reserve. She went to St. Paul’s (AB) and St. Alban’s (SK) Residential Schools and the Alberta College in Edmonton. Rather than follow her sisters into nursing, she chose instead to follow her dream of being a secretary. She was the first trained secretary from the Blood reserve.
Pauline has devoted her life to the promotion of a better understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. She organized the Calumet Indian Club so that Indigenous teenagers coming to Calgary for higher education would have a safe place to meet; was a founding member and first Treasurer of the Calgary Indian Friendship Centre; and was on the Indian Events Committee of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Association for over 30 years, where she helped organize an annual Indian Art Show, co-founded the bannock booth, and organized programs for the Elders. She also volunteered at the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter and YWCA.
In 1966, Pauline recreated historical Blackfoot dresses from old photos of her grandmother and presented educational programs using those outfits in a fashion show. She would highlight the amazing culture of the Blackfoot people and educate on the origins of the dresses with her husband, Hugh. She became the first recipient of the Chief David Crowchild Memorial Award, presented from the City of Calgary by Premier Ralph Klein. This award acknowledged her work in bettering the relations between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous.
Pauline lived a full and active life and always held family as her first priority. She was very interested in family genealogy and it was her mission to complete the Healy family tree, which her daughter Leah helped her achieve this year. Pauline enjoyed many hobbies throughout her life, including painting, quilting, sewing, shopping, dancing, travelling, doing puzzles, watching football, going to powwows, and listening to Randy Travis.
She will be remembered for her kind disposition, caring heart, and her ability to find the best in everyone. She mentioned that she would like for her epitaph to read, “Never leave the house without your rouge. You always want to feel good in the moment.”
Like her favourite flower, the prairie crocus, Pauline was resilient, beautiful, elegant, and instantly loved by anyone who met her. She will remain forever in our hearts and memories.
A service will be held for her at 11:00 am on Saturday May 24th, 2025 at the Holy Cross Anglican Church at 2828 19 St NW, Calgary, Alberta.
In lieu of flowers, Pauline would wish for everyone to buy something nice for themselves and think of her.
