SEREDA, Mary MARY SEREDA 1939 ~ 2025 Mary Sereda (nee Ponomar), better known to most as Baba, left her earthly home to live peacefully with her eternal Father, Wednesday, May 14, 2025 after a lengthy battle with dementia. Although dementia took away some of her cognitive abilities, it did not diminish her spirit or love for us.
Mom was born in Novy Buh, Ukraine on Aug 3, 1939, to Yuchim and Ahafia Ponomar. Her family left Ukraine and moved to Germany for several years before boarding the Ship S.S. Samaria in France on November 21, 1949, to arrive at Pier 21 in Halifax on November 30, 1949. They then boarded the train west to Magrath where they worked on the beet fields.
On a cold winter day in December of 1955, mom met dad (Alex Sereda) and the two were engaged on her birthday in 1956 and married October 27 the same year. Mom and Dad lived in Lethbridge until they were expecting their first child, Leona. That fall Mom and Dad bought their own farm in the Newlands district west of Kipp. The family grew; Peter, Zoia, and Irene completed their family. In 1964, they moved to the farm in Shaughnessy where they resided until 2004. At that time, Mom and Dad sold the farm and retired to Lethbridge. In 2017 they moved into St. Therese Villa. Mom was moved to Memory Care in September 2020. We are grateful for the care and support she received during her challenging journey.
Mary was predeceased by her father, Yuchim in 1964; mother, Ahafia, in 1973; great-granddaughter Cora Kraemer August 2015; husband Alex Sereda in December 2021; and grandson Kelly Kraemer in January 2022.
Mom is survived by daughter Leona (Kevin) Kraemer; Jason (Jackie) Jaxon, Jonas; son Peter (Lori) Sereda, Nicholas (Kristie), Westin, Montgomery, Beau; Nathan (Naomi); Nolan, Isabella; Nevin (Charlee); daughter Zoia (Daryl) Schacher, Tanessa Holden, Macrae, Payce; Braeson (Katherine); daughter Irene (Gord) Schussler, Jaylene (Lance) Maren, Rhett, Lindi; Deiryk (Hannah) Hunter, Garrett, Kaleb, Marijka, Jed; Clayton (Myriah).
Mom is remembered for her gentle, easy-going and fun-loving nature, support, and unwavering love.
We love you dearly and forever.
Many thanks to the staff of St. Therese Villa and Dr. Stitt for their great care of mom over the years.
A Come and Go Viewing will be held from 6:30 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 STREET SOUTH, Lethbridge, Alberta.
A Funeral Service will be held at THE HOLY TRINITY UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH, 643 – 13 Street N, Lethbridge, Alberta on Friday May 30, 2025, at 1:00 pm with Father Nazari Kobylniak, officiating.
Interment will take place in the Mountain View Cemetery

The Funeral Service will be held at Knox United Church, 4929 – 50 Avenue, Taber on Friday, May 30, 2025 at 2:00 P.M. Private burial to follow at the Taber Memorial Garden. To honor Doug, Jeremy and Jamie ask that anyone attending the Funeral Service, if they are able to do so, to wear “Crocs and Socks” in Doug’s memory. Condolences may be forwarded by visiting our website at http://www.southlandfuneral.com.
Those who are unable to attend and wish to view the service online may do so by visiting Doug’s obituary page on our website and clicking on the livestream link that will be available at 1:45 P.M. on Friday, May 30, 2025. Barring any technical difficulties, the livestream will begin at 1:00 P.M.
Doug is survived by his kids, Jeremy (Antonia) Campbell of Taber and Jamie (Kevin) McCurdy of Medicine Hat, his grandson Jaxson and his two grand-dogs, Nala and Gizmo. He is also survived by his brother Ken (Diane), sister Brenda, along with several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Rhona in 2018.
Doug was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan on February 29, 1952 to Clifford and Evelyn Campbell. He graduated from Swift Current Comprehensive High School and immediately moved to Medicine Hat to attend the Medicine Hat College. After obtaining his Diploma in Physical Education, Doug moved to Lethbridge to attend the University of Lethbridge and obtain his Teaching Degree. This is where he met the love of his life, Rhona. Doug offered his seat on the City Bus to Rhona and the rest is history. They were married for forty one years when Rhona passed away in April 2018.
Doug had a real passion for teaching and was even brave enough to teach Grade eight for several years. He taught for thirty seven years before retiring in 2012. For anyone who knew Doug, he was obsessed with wearing “Crocs and socks”. No matter the weather outside, Doug could always be seen wearing his iconic Crocs. When he retired, his colleagues and students had a parade for him where they all wore “Crocs and socks” to honor his retirement from teaching.
Doug always had a smile on his face (unless he missed a shot in golf) and always had some kind of comical thing to say in the conversation. He enjoyed several sports but his favorites were bowling and golf. If Doug wasn’t bowling, he was golfing. He threw two perfect games in his bowling career and made it to Nationals in 1997. Doug and Jeremy played in several tournaments and won the majority of them. He said it was due to his short game but Jeremy knew it was thanks to his long drives. “We let Doug have the win”. He would have the best tan lines on his legs from his golf socks up to his shin and his golf glove.
Doug was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2016, Kidney Failure in 2021 and Dementia in 2023. His health continued to decline over the years, resulting in having to move into a Long Term Care facility in March 2024. In the Fall of 2024, his health took a significant decline and continued to worsen, which ultimately lead to his passing.
Doug will be missed by many friends and family. His family and friends are comforted knowing that Doug has been reunited with Rhona, the love of his life, along with other family members and friends who predeceased him.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Doug’s name may be made directly to Taber Lost Paws Society, 5710 – 66 Avenue, Taber, Alberta T1G 1B8 (www.taberlostpawssociety.com) where Nala was adopted from.
Arrangements in care of Southland Funeral Chapel, Taber. Telephone: (403) 223-8778.

I was diagnosed 4 years ago at age 60. Symptoms were tremor in the right leg, loss of handwriting ability (my normally beautiful cursive writing was now small, cramped printing and a soft voice. I also had difficulty rising from a seated position and have balance issues. I started out taking only Azilect, then Mirapex, and then Sinemet. Several months ago, I started falling frequently, hence the reason for Sinemet. During the summer of 2021, I was introduced to Uinehealth Centre, and their effective PD-5 protocol. The treatment significantly alleviated my symptoms, outperforming the prescribed medications. My husband says it has done me a lot of good in terms of balance and ability to walk and get up from chairs. I can now write without my hands shaking; I can feel my strength again. I was fortunate to have the loving support of my husband and family. I make it a point to appreciate every day! Visit uinehealthcentre. net
