Douglas is survived by his loving wife Joan Hazell of Taber; son Lorne (Judy) Hazell of Grassy Lake; grandsons Christopher (Angela), Trevor, Scott (Kelsey) and great grandchildren Rhyan, Blake, Blair, Connor, Graydon, Ainsley and Anniston.
Douglas was born in Medicine Hat on March 26, 1926. He was the middle child of Sam and Clara Hazell. Douglas spent his first two years in Viking, Alberta and in 1928, his family moved to the Hazell homestead south of Grassy Lake.
Douglas loved telling stories about growing up on the farm. He fondly recalled attending both the Flickenger and Skiff schools and being both a bus driver and janitor as a part time job at the Skiff School. From 1946 – 1948, he attended Olds College. Upon completion of his diploma, he returned home to farm with his dad and brother Curtis.
On January 22, 1954, Douglas married Joan Burns Turnbull of Grassy Lake. They had one son Lorne, who they raised on the family farm. Lorne was the apple of Douglas’s eye and he was so proud when Lorne officially joined Hazell Farms in 1976.
Douglas and Joan moved to Grassy Lake in 1981 where they quickly became a part of the local community. Douglas was a member of the Masonic Lodge in town. They spent countless hours riding bikes and attending community functions with the neighbors. In 2001 they moved to Taber where they continued their friendships with the old Grassy neighbors and met new friends in the neighborhood. Douglas was a kind and gentle soul. He always had a smile, a joke and a word of encouragement for everyone he met.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Douglas’ name may be made directly to The Good Samaritan Society Garden Vista in Magrath by visiting http://www.gss.org/ways-to-support/donate-in-honour-or-memory and in the “I want to support” field, please choose “Garden Vista”, to ensure the donations specifically support the Magrath location.
The family would like to extend a huge thank you to the staff of both the Clearview Lodge in Taber and The Good Samaritan Society Garden Vista in Magrath for the exceptional care they provided to Douglas over the past few months.
Arrangements in care of Southland Funeral Chapel, Taber. Telephone: (403) 223-8778.
