By Lethbridge Herald Obituaries on July 12, 2025.

HEWARD, Wilfred Dwight HEWARD, Wilfred Dwight October 21, 1949 – June 27, 2025 Dwight Heward, “Papa”, passed away peacefully on June 27 at the age of 75, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 51 years, Margaret Heward, his two daughters, Allison Foreman (Michael) and Mackenzie Graham (Troy), and his younger brother Lynn (Michelle). His memory also lives on in the hearts of his five grandchildren, Madisen, Kherys, Ryker, Jace, and Juno, who stole his heart the minute they were born. He also leaves behind many other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.
Dwight was born in Claresholm, AB, to the late Joseph and Evelyn Heward. He was predeceased by his older brothers Dale and Dennis.
Dwight graduated from the Ponoka School of Nursing in 1973. He went on to practice as a psychiatric nurse, spending most of his 31-year career at the Lethbridge Correctional Centre. He worked hard, allowing him to provide for his family and take an early retirement. He lived his 20 years of retirement to the fullest, traveling the world and spending time with family. He loved playing cards, reading, puzzles, and especially trips to Vegas. Dwight had a knack for details and was a planner to the very end. His interests and quirks live on through his children and grandchildren, and are a true testament to the impact he had on their lives.
The family would like to thank the amazing health care workers at the following locations – FMC surgical unit, Jack Ady, Medicine Shoppe 374, Arthur Child, and AgeCare SkyPointe Hospice. Some of you were there for the fight and some of you were there for the end, but you all made a difference and we can’t thank you enough. Also a giant thanks to all of the friends and family that stepped up to help in whatever way you could; your kindness did not go unnoticed and we are forever grateful.
It was Dwight’s wish that he return to Claresholm to be interred alongside his family. The family and close friends will hold a private gathering in August to celebrate his life. We ask that any memorial donations be made to Jack Ady or Arthur Child in lieu of flowers.
Rest in peace, Dragon. We love you.

Douglas is survived by his loving wife Joan Hazell of Taber; son Lorne (Judy) Hazell of Grassy Lake; grandsons Christopher (Angela), Trevor, Scott (Kelsey) and great grandchildren Rhyan, Blake, Blair, Connor, Graydon, Ainsley and Anniston.
Douglas was born in Medicine Hat on March 26, 1926. He was the middle child of Sam and Clara Hazell. Douglas spent his first two years in Viking, Alberta and in 1928, his family moved to the Hazell homestead south of Grassy Lake.
Douglas loved telling stories about growing up on the farm. He fondly recalled attending both the Flickenger and Skiff schools and being both a bus driver and janitor as a part time job at the Skiff School. From 1946 – 1948, he attended Olds College. Upon completion of his diploma, he returned home to farm with his dad and brother Curtis.
On January 22, 1954, Douglas married Joan Burns Turnbull of Grassy Lake. They had one son Lorne, who they raised on the family farm. Lorne was the apple of Douglas’s eye and he was so proud when Lorne officially joined Hazell Farms in 1976.
Douglas and Joan moved to Grassy Lake in 1981 where they quickly became a part of the local community. Douglas was a member of the Masonic Lodge in town. They spent countless hours riding bikes and attending community functions with the neighbors. In 2001 they moved to Taber where they continued their friendships with the old Grassy neighbors and met new friends in the neighborhood. Douglas was a kind and gentle soul. He always had a smile, a joke and a word of encouragement for everyone he met.
