He was predeceased by his parents Calvin and Iola Layton; brother Dick Layton; sister Carolyn Zaugg, brothers-in-law Ray Bird, Ken (Jean) Bullock, Doran Wilkes and Delynn Hirsche.
Leo was born May 19, 1940 to Calvin and Iola (née Harding) Layton. He grew up on the family farm south of the sugar factory. Being raised with seven siblings there was a lot of give and take, but also plenty of loving, caring and sharing. Leo was taught at an early age good work ethics and to love his Heavenly Father.
At the age of twenty one, Leo served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to New Zealand. Soon after his return he married his sweetheart Diane Bullock. Leo was born and raised on one end of the section and Diane was born and raised on the other, later they built their home together in the middle. Leo and Diane were blessed with two sons, Blair and Robert. Leo farmed and went to work for Great Plains Supply to supplement their income, later he worked for O & R Irrigation. But the job he loved most was with the Municipal District of Taber, where he worked for thirty five years. Life was good – work all week, enjoy sporting activities with the boys and church on Sunday. When the boys left home and went on their missions, Leo sold the farm and they started enjoying retirement by heading south to Yuma for their winters.
Arrangements in care of Southland Funeral Chapel, Taber. Telephone: (403) 223-8778.
CALDWELL, Peter
PETER CALDWELL August 20, 1946 ~ August 17, 2025 AKA-Lipper, Pete, Dad, Grandpa, Papa, Petey-Pie, Papa Smurf, Uncle Fuzzy, Grumples, Grout Man, Karaoke King. Hello world, this is Peter!
Hello Peter, this is world! I’m off to my great reward but before I go sports fans, I have a few things to say:
From my early beginnings in eastern Canada to my big move out west, I have had many wonderful adventures! The greatest of all began on Feb 1, 1969 when I married Susan Giguère, my strong, patient, and loving wife of 56 years. My greatest pride and joy has been raising our four children Stephanie, Myles, Alicia and Megan with whom I have shared so much laughter. I am deeply thankful for having a friendship with each of my son-in-laws Dan (Stephanie), Scott (Alicia) and Brent (Megan) and the good fortune of playing an important role in my ELEVEN grandchildren’s lives. Allow me to introduce them in their birth order: Brittany Caldwell, Ben McDonald, Wyatt McDonald, Ryan Mooney, Evannlee Rennie, Nathan Mooney, Wesley Cummins, Olivia Mooney, Isla Cummins, Ella Mooney and Molly Mooney.
My children have asked that I share some of my words of wisdom with all you sports fans out there. Here are a few of my tried and true:
-If you are going to be in the parade, you may as well lead it!
-The only thing you can do wrong is to do nothing at all!
-If we were all the same, it would be a pretty boring world!
-Leave a little for the next guy!
-Your most valuable possession is your time because you never know how much of it you have.
And on that note, I’ve lived a good life, 78 years, 11 months and 17 days to be exact, and my work here is done.
Beam me up Scotty!
A note of gratitude from the family :
Thank you to Dr. Strank, Dr. Shukkoor, Dr. Haner, Homecare RN Dyan, the staff at St. Mike’s Palliative Care Center: RNs Renee, Lorina, Josh, Raphael, Mandy and Eileen, and Dad’s care team Brenda, Sheena, Ilja, Joanne, Chrissandra, Crystal, Sherry and Louis. Our apologies if we have missed a name, please know that your care for our Dad is appreciated beyond words.
In keeping with Dad’s wishes, there will be no formal service. In time, our family will gather for a trip back east to lay Dad to rest in his childhood playground, Port Severn, Ontario. In lieu of flowers or donations, please help keep Dad’s legacy alive by appreciating the beauty of spring’s arrival, anticipating the season’s first robin, and spreading joy through practicing generosity and random acts of kindness.

LOO, Richard
RICHARD LOO 1933 ~ 2025 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Loo, beloved husband of Mable, devoted father to Debra Bingham, Ryan (TJ) Loo, April (Jim) Loo Pangle, Lamont (Alicia) Loo; adored grandfather to Madyson (Caycee Wendorff) Loo, RJ Loo, Katherine (Matt) Loo Whittaker, Matthew Loo, Samantha (Austin) Loo Israelsky, Courtney Loo and Madison Hanson (granddaughter by great affection).
Richard was born in Hoy Ping, Canton, China on October 20, 1933. He was the eldest of three. Being the eldest son entitled to him the ticket to provide a better life for his family. His father passed when he was only 12 years of age, so with the help of his grandfather, Richard immigrated to Canada in 1953. Lethbridge was chosen by his grandfather as he had some connections to the community.
ESL classes became a priority that would become part of his daily life for the next several years. His schoolteacher, Mrs. Seltzer, saw great promise in his youth. She recognized his eagerness and dedication to excel. She wrote a letter of recommendation and suggested that he apply for a position in an English-speaking workplace. There was a local bicycle and sporting goods shop that he applied at.
Richard started working with repairs in the back of the shop. As his language skills were honed and he became more fluid, he moved to customer service at the front of the shop and eventually was promoted to store manager. His career at Bert & Mac’s Cycle spanned nearly 40 years. It was here that his many lifelong connections would blossom into forever friendships. When he retired, he was unaccustomed to so much free time. Volunteering his time was at the top of his list. First up was at the local food bank, then helping his sister-in-law and brother-in- law (Lynn and Ming Mah) with their restaurant until it closed. He was often found volunteering for several organizations at the Casino. He loved choosing the meal which they provided! He served as president of the local chapter of the Kuo Min Tong (The Chinese National League).
Gardening and growing his prize sized kohlrabi, zucchini, goji berries and plethora of vegetables was his greatest passion. His joy came from sharing and giving the many fruits of his labor.
He loved shopping. Sometimes several times a day, sharing all his bargains with family and friends and anyone who was willing to receive his gifts.
Richard is survived by his wife Mable, of 67 years, his children, his grandchildren, numerous relatives and many friends who will carry forward his memory with honour and love.
For those who wish, memorial donations in Richard’s name may be made to St. Therese Villa or Chinook Regional Hospital.
Special thanks to Dr. Randy Moore of Calgary (Lougheed Hospital), the entire ward of amazing doctors and staff in emergency and, on 3B at CRH. Additional thanks to Dr. Lagadan for her warmth and compassion.
A Celebration of Richard’s Life will be held at 12:30pm on Friday, August 29, 2025 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Dr. Bruce Martin, officiating.
