LOO, Richard

RICHARD LOO 1933 ~ 2025 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Loo, beloved husband of Mable, devoted father to Debra Bingham, Ryan (TJ) Loo, April (Jim) Loo Pangle, Lamont (Alicia) Loo; adored grandfather to Madyson (Caycee Wendorff) Loo, RJ Loo, Katherine (Matt) Loo Whittaker, Matthew Loo, Samantha (Austin) Loo Israelsky, Courtney Loo and Madison Hanson (granddaughter by great affection).
Richard was born in Hoy Ping, Canton, China on October 20, 1933. He was the eldest of three. Being the eldest son entitled to him the ticket to provide a better life for his family. His father passed when he was only 12 years of age, so with the help of his grandfather, Richard immigrated to Canada in 1953. Lethbridge was chosen by his grandfather as he had some connections to the community.
ESL classes became a priority that would become part of his daily life for the next several years. His schoolteacher, Mrs. Seltzer, saw great promise in his youth. She recognized his eagerness and dedication to excel. She wrote a letter of recommendation and suggested that he apply for a position in an English-speaking workplace. There was a local bicycle and sporting goods shop that he applied at.
Richard started working with repairs in the back of the shop. As his language skills were honed and he became more fluid, he moved to customer service at the front of the shop and eventually was promoted to store manager. His career at Bert & Mac’s Cycle spanned nearly 40 years. It was here that his many lifelong connections would blossom into forever friendships. When he retired, he was unaccustomed to so much free time. Volunteering his time was at the top of his list. First up was at the local food bank, then helping his sister-in-law and brother-in- law (Lynn and Ming Mah) with their restaurant until it closed. He was often found volunteering for several organizations at the Casino. He loved choosing the meal which they provided! He served as president of the local chapter of the Kuo Min Tong (The Chinese National League).
Gardening and growing his prize sized kohlrabi, zucchini, goji berries and plethora of vegetables was his greatest passion. His joy came from sharing and giving the many fruits of his labor.
He loved shopping. Sometimes several times a day, sharing all his bargains with family and friends and anyone who was willing to receive his gifts.
Richard is survived by his wife Mable, of 67 years, his children, his grandchildren, numerous relatives and many friends who will carry forward his memory with honour and love.
For those who wish, memorial donations in Richard’s name may be made to St. Therese Villa or Chinook Regional Hospital.
Special thanks to Dr. Randy Moore of Calgary (Lougheed Hospital), the entire ward of amazing doctors and staff in emergency and, on 3B at CRH. Additional thanks to Dr. Lagadan for her warmth and compassion.
A Celebration of Richard’s Life will be held at 12:30pm on Friday, August 29, 2025 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Dr. Bruce Martin, officiating.

HABERMAN, John

HABERMAN, JOHN JACOB RICHARD Jack Haberman was born in Calgary October 5, 1944 to Mary and John Haberman.
He grew up in Lethbridge, at first living with the family at the airport in housing that had been converted from WWII Army barracks. He told many stories of playing with his friends on the runways and climbing on planes and exploring. When his step-son Nicolas was reconstructing the main army building for the funeral home, Jack knew where the original walls started and which sections had been added over the years. He had so much history to add to the project.
Jack graduated from LCI in 1962 and did one year at the University of Lethbridge in bioscience. In 1964 he went to UBC for engineering but halfway through switched to medicine and graduated in 1968 with a degree in family medicine. Jack then moved to Edmonton to the Misericordia Hospital where he did his residency and in 1970 he started practicing as a physician at the Campbell Clinic in Lethbridge. He spent his entire medical career at the Campbell, retiring in 2020. He was the original “Black Bag” doctor and long after making house calls was not popular he would still head out after work many nights to visit sick patients who could not make it to the clinic. He worked in emergency and surgery for many years and he always said that he enjoyed every minute of his work.
Jack always said he was blessed with four sons, four step-sons and one step-daughter He coached most of them in soccer or hockey and for many years he coached more than one team. He loved sports and was a great fan of watching anything the grandchildren played. The family was his greatest joy and he took the opportunity to travel with the different families and he was always looking for things the entire family could do together. Jack had Calgary Flames tickets for many years and for a lot of those years he would drive to Calgary for the game, drive home and be at the hospital by 7 the next morning. In the later years he would stay over and take the next day off.
Jack and his wife Rita have been together 35 years with their blended family of 9 children, 17 grandchildren and two great granddaughters. Jack loved the chaos of Christmas, the summer holiday trips and the general business of a large family.
He leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife Rita, sons Albert, Ron and Tim; step-sons Maurey, Michael, Nicolas and Nathan and one step-daughter, Audra; also 16 grandchildren and 2 great granddaughters. He was pre-deceased by his son Shane and his grandson Elijiah. He is sharing family time with them now.
A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, August 30, 2025 at Salmon and Sons Funeral Home (433 Stubb Ross Rd S, Lethbridge), with burial to follow at The Mountain View Cemetery.
A Viewing will be held from 7:00 to 8:00pm on Friday August 29, 2025 at the funeral home.
