WILLOUGHBY, Verna WILLOUGHBY 1938 – 2025 It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that the family of VERNA MAY WILLOUGHBY announce her sudden passing on Monday, September 1, 2025 at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 87 years.
Verna is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Sheryl (Ward), and held forever in the hearts of her grandchildren; Justin (Jenelle), Cori, Lane, Sarah, and great-granddaughter, Kinleigh. Verna is also remembered by her loving sister, Marlene; sister-in-law, Verle; and several nieces and nephews. Each of them carries with them not only her love but also her recipes, her laughter, and her gentle but steady encouragement.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Leigh Willoughby (2019), with whom she shared a marriage of love and companionship; as well as her parents, Thomas and Icele Craig, who instilled in her the values of hard work and perseverance.
Born on April 24, 1938, in Pincher Creek, Alberta, Verna’s life was defined by devotion, resilience, and an unwavering sense of independence. She spent her career as a teacher of Grade 1, nurturing countless young minds. To her, every child held promise, and she never tired of guiding them through their very first steps into learning.
Verna’s home was always filled with life, whether through the aroma of something baking in the oven, the presence of her cats curling at her feet, or the laughter of grandchildren eagerly waiting to taste her latest recipe. She developed thousands of dishes over the years – some traditional, others wonderfully unique – each one a reflection of her creativity and her deep care for those she loved most. Her kitchen was her canvas, and her grandchildren were often the delighted critics.
She also cherished her quiet moments with a good book, often losing herself in the thrilling pages of legal thriller novels. Yet, just as much as she valued solitude, she thrived in community. Her circle of close friends was a source of connection and companionship, and Verna loved to visit, laugh, and share stories over a cup of tea.
Fiercely independent, she lived in her own home right up until her passing, tending to her garden this year as she had done for several before, especially following Leigh’s passing.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta at
http://www.heartandstroke.ca.
As per Verna’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. In memory of Verna, her family asks that you take a moment to do a random act of kindness for someone – perhaps a friend, a neighbour, or someone you love.
