GYORFI, Michael MICHAEL GYORFI 1931 ~ 2025 Michael Francis Gyorfi of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of the late Grace Gyorfi, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2025, three weeks before his 94th birthday. Mike will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Margo (Frank) Merkl of Medicine Hat; his grandchildren, Kristin (Tyler) Townsend, Andrea Merkl, Janine Merkl (Curtis Cleveland), Jaimee Gyorfi (Stephen), Kayla (Shaun) Courtney, and Adam (Danielle) Gyorfi; his sister, Kay (Bud) Phillips of Lethbridge; as well as 18 cherished great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his devoted wife, Grace: his parents, Alex and Elizabeth Gyorfi; siblings, Bernard, Alexander Jr and Isabelle; and his sons, Doug and Robert. Born on November 9, 1931, in Bow Island, Alberta, Mike was raised and educated in his hometown. At just 17, he purchased his first quarter section of land from his father, marking the beginning of a lifelong passion for farming. In 1953, he married Grace, and together they built a life rooted in hard work, faith, and family, residing in the Bow Island area for 45 years. He was a well-respected neighbour, friend and businessman. Retirement brought them to Medicine Hat, where they resided in Park Meadows Estates for 25 years. Mike was deeply committed to the advancement of agriculture in southern Alberta. He was instrumental in the development of the first pressurized irrigation distribution system of the St. Mary River Irrigation District (SMRID) – the first of its kind in Alberta. This groundbreaking initiative transformed farming practices in the region and remains a testament to his forward-thinking vision and dedication to improving the lives of local farmers. In addition to his contributions to agriculture, Mike dedicated much of his life to serving his community and advancing education. He was a longtime member of the Bow Island Separate School Board and served faithfully at both the provincial and national levels through the Catholic School Trustees Association, including holding the office of President. He also served on the University of Lethbridge Senate for four years, where his thoughtful guidance and commitment to learning were deeply valued. Beyond his professional and community endeavors, Mike enjoyed curling, hunting, and golf, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and treasured time spent with family and friends. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Mike’s life at the Funeral Mass and luncheon which will be held at Holy Family Parish on Friday, October 24, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. A private interment will follow at the Bow Island Cemetery. Mike’s legacy of innovation, faith, service, and love will continue to live on in all who knew him.

Dad grew up in the Crowsnest Pass, Bellevue, AB. His favorite past time when he was young was hiking the trails in the mountains with his dog. As he grew older, he worked in the mines and the local bakery. Many don’t know this but there was a gang called the Night Riders who rode horses in Bellevue. Dad would tell us stories of his gang and the trouble they would get into with the law. We laugh now at those stories but eventually his mom sent him to live in Calgary to live with his aunt to get his away from the trouble. The Night Riders were well known in the Pass as trouble makers. As far as we know dad was the last member of the gang until his passing.
Dad met mom through family members who were pen pals. They eventually married in 1955 and recently, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary before mom passed away. After they were married, they lived in the Pass for a while but eventually work was hard to find so they moved to Calgary and then settled in Lethbridge. This is where dad eventually got on with the City of Lethbridge and drove city bus for 32 years, retiring in 1993. Over the years, they enjoyed camping and spending time with their children and grandchildren.
We would like to say a special thank you to Dr. Lagadin, the nurses and caregivers of Floor 4B at the Chinook Regional Hospital for their professional help with Dad. Their kindness, warmth, compassion, and manners were absolutely amazing.
As per Dad’s wishes, we will be having a private service. In dad’s memory, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (cancer.ca)
