NORBY, Patricia PATRICIA MAE NORBY Patricia Mae Norby beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2026, at the Willow Creek Community Care Centre in Claresholm, Alberta, at the age of 98.
She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Bessie Dobbin; her first husband, Ernest Rosvold; her son, Blair Rosvold; her sister Myrna and her husband Eddie Tayler as well as her sister Colleen, and her son Jeff Hall. She is survived by her beloved husband of nearly 40 years, Roy Norby, her three sons Curtis, Barrie (Irmi) and Ronald (Samantha) and stepdaughter Tyrene; her grandchildren Jason, Cherie, Rachael, Natasha, Calvin, Madeline, Catlin, Randee and great grandchildren Teva, Brooklyn, Daniel, Evelyn and Willa along with nieces and nephews. Patricia was the firstborn of Walter and Bessie Dobbin, welcomed into the world on January 13, 1928, in Parkbeg, Saskatchewan, about 58 kilometres west of Moose Jaw. She grew up working alongside her father on the family farm north of Parkbeg – driving tractor, planting and harvesting crops, and caring for livestock. She was, as he fondly said, his “right hand” until she left home to work in Moose Jaw at Joyner’s Department Store for several years. During that time, her love of music blossomed. She sang on the radio a few times in the early 1940s and was later asked to sing at a funeral – clear testimony to the beauty of her voice. Her sons remember fondly the late 1960s, when family and friends would gather around the piano in their Moose Jaw home, with Ernie playing and everyone singing along. Her love of music continued throughout her life, especially her fondness for the Irish lullaby “Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral” and “Harbour Lights.”While working in Moose Jaw, she met a handsome 29-year-old young man named Ernest Rosvold. They were married on October 7, 1950. In time, they welcomed four sons – Curtis, Barrie, Blair, and Ronald – who will forever cherish her love, guidance, and gentle presence. The family began their life together in Viceroy, Saskatchewan, later moving to Moose Jaw, then Swift Current, and eventually to Lethbridge, Alberta. Sadly, Ernest passed away in September 1983. To the joy of her sons, Patricia later met and married Roy Norby on October 25, 1986. Roy deeply loved and cherished his “darling, beautiful wife” throughout the 40 years they shared together in Claresholm. A builder by trade, Roy often relied on Pat as his “excellent helper” on many projects over the years. They also enjoyed traveling together.
Patricia even took up skiing for a few seasons. Though she lived by the principle of never quitting something she started, she eventually decided that snowplowing down a mountain was not quite her “cup of tea.” Her willingness to try something entirely new at 60-plus years of age was greatly admired by Roy and her sons. She was physically strong throughout her life. Even into her late 80s and early 90s, if she grabbed your arm, you certainly knew it. As Barrie recalls, “With Dad often away on long-haul trucking trips, she was frequently the primary disciplinarian – and she was very effective at it.” Patricia built a life grounded in kindness, resilience, and quiet strength. She was known for always thinking the best of others and did not tolerate negative speech about people in her presence. This spirit led to kind words and thoughtful actions toward all. Though she did not seek the limelight, those who knew her well felt the warmth of her generous heart. She was an excellent cook. Her sons especially remember her deep apple pie with great affection. Even when money was scarce and she had a husband and four hungry boys to feed, she could create a satisfying meal from very little. A very important part of her life was her strong faith in her God Jehovah. In fact, she dedicated her life to His service and got baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses about the same time as she married Ernie back in the early 1950’s. She regularly accompanied her husband Ernie and then in turn her husband Roy in helping others who were inclined to listen, about Bible teachings and she was instrumental in helping others to learn what the Bible says about the eventual end of human suffering and the wonderful hope for the future under the Kingdom of God that is spoken of in the Lord’s prayer. Truly, Her memory will continue to live on in the stories shared, the traditions she passed down, and the lives she shaped throughout her very long life. But also, and most importantly, she believed in the resurrection that is taught in the Bible. It teaches that we will see her again because she is in the memory of the most important person of all-her loving creator Jehovah. A memorial and celebration of Patricia’s life will be held on February 28 at 2:00 p.m. (MST) / 1:00 p.m. (PST) at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 4807 2A Street East, Claresholm, Alberta.
