BAILEY, Elizabeth “Betty” BAILEY ELIZABETH ‘BETTY’ JANE BAILEY passed away the evening of Friday, February 20th, 2026, the greatest teacher, and mother, any of us could have ever hoped for.
Betty is survived by her daughter Jennifer (Jason) deBoer and granddaughters Ceili and Bridget; and son Sean (Shanna) Bailey and grandsons Connor and Ryder. Betty will be greatly missed by her family.
Teaching was what you were put on this Earth to do, and you taught all of us so many things, proper grammar, spelling, the War of 1812, and even the Dewey Decimal system, when that was still around. You tried to teach me about patience and understanding, even when it seemed like that wasn’t possible. You taught Jenn how to clean her room and pick up her stuff, even if that took longer than it should have. And it wasn’t just us, you were an educator to all of our friends, to those that stuck around and to those that moved on. As well as all of your students, which if my rough math is close, is probably over sixteen thousand kids, all said and done. A lot of them loved you, a lot of them liked you, and I’m sure a few of them “hated” you, but that never mattered, you treated everyone the same, you treated them fair and with respect, and maybe that’s the most important lesson of all.
At Betty’s request, no funeral service will be held. A Celebration of Life will be held in the Summer.

GILLETT, Darren DARREN GILLETT 1952 ~ 2026 Darren Rhys Owen Gillet, of Lethbridge, AB, beloved husband of Trish York-Gillett, passed away peacefully at Chinook Regional Hospital on Monday, February 23, 2026, at the age of 73 years.
Besides his loving wife Trish, Darren is survived by his son Brett (Georgia) York; grandchildren Henry and Owen; his sisters Rhonda (Gerry), Brenda (Norm), and Debbie (Dean), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.
Darren was predeceased by his parents Charles James Owen Gillett and Irma Maria Gillett (née Schulhauser); brother Randy Bing, and his son Paul York.
The Man, the Myth, the Legend! Darren was truly a one-of-a-kind human being. Our lives were incredibly blessed by his beautiful presence. We are forever grateful for the time we shared with him.
Born in Vancouver, BC, Darren grew up surrounded by the beauty of North Vancouver. He loved getting out in nature; creek fishing, swimming and catching frogs in Lynn Canyon Park.
The Gillett Family were members of the North Shore Winter Club and the Hollyburn Country Club, embracing all the activities. After a hockey practice at age 8, Darren was amazed at the talents of a figure skater, Jay Humphrey, flying down the ice at top speed and landing a double flip jump. He promptly said to his Mom “I want to do that!” The next day he started lessons with world renowned Olympian, Edy Rada and thus began his illustrious 65-year career in Figure Skating.
Darren’s competitive skating career spanned 13 years as he attained National level competitive status in both Men’s Singles and Dance. He proudly competed at the Senior Dance Level with partner Jill Miller.
Three years after graduating from Windsor Secondary in North Vancouver, BC, he accepted a coaching position with the Glengarry Figure Skating Club and moved to Penticton, accompanied by Jill who would become his wife. Once in the Okanagan, Darren enjoyed life to the fullest – boating, fishing, hunting, curling, skiing at Apex Mountain, slow-pitch baseball where he was Captain, Pitcher & MVP for many years. Everything fast suited him, hence his love of motorcycles and sport cars.
Coaching was his calling. With over 37 years with the Glengarry Figure Skating Club, he developed many champions and guided countless skaters to achieve gold level tests. His leadership extended beyond the ice; he proudly spearheaded the 1st ever National Canadian Coaching Conference for Skate Canada in 1988.
Darren’s expertise and reputation carried him to contracts in Merida, Mexico and Fernie, BC and job offers from Palm Beach, Florida & Seattle, Washington. Darren and his wife Trish joined the Lethbridge Skating Club in July 2012. It was a wonderful final coaching chapter for Coaches D & T!
Along with coaching, Darren was the go-to guy for expert figure skate sharpening in Southern Alberta & BC. Darren retired from coaching in the fall of 2025. He was grateful to have mentored many wonderful skaters and their families in Lethbridge.
Thank you, Darren for leaving such a great legacy! Rest in peace, You have left an indelible imprint on our hearts. We will miss you.
A Celebration of Darren’s Life will be held August 2026 in Penticton, BC. Dates and details to follow. We look forward to hearing all your stories about our beloved “Coach D.”
Cremation entrusted to Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels.
Flowers are gratefully declined. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made in Darren’s name to your favorite animal charity in honor of his very loved dogs Dixie, Tia, Buddy, Max, and Samson.

COWARD, Frederick COWARD FREDERICK WILLIAM COWARD, FREDERICK WILLIAM COWARD, beloved husband of the late Gail Coward of Lethbridge, passed away at St. Michael’s Health Centre on February 22, 2026, at the age of 90 years.
Fred was born on October 14, 1935 and raised as an only child in Winnipeg. In his youth he was extremely active in the Boy Scouts of Canada, even representing Manitoba at a jamboree in Jamaica in 1952. His work ethic was second to none, whether it was selling shoes at Eaton’s, lifeguarding at local pools or manning the mosquito fogging trucks down the streets of Winnipeg. But the work started in earnest when Fred entered law school in 1958.
Fred’s impressive legal career spanned almost 60 years. He graduated from the University of Manitoba law school in Winnipeg in 1963. While attending law school he articled at Swift, Macleod, Deacon, Kirby and Gregory. He was called to the Bar in 1963 and subsequently practised law at Doak, Buckingham, Pressey and Coward. He then joined the legal department for the Metropolitan Corporation of Greater Winnipeg and just one year later became a partner in the law firm of James and Coward. In 1966, at just 30 years of age, he was appointed as a magistrate for the northern part of the Western Judicial District at Minnedosa, a position he held until 1972 when he became a judge of the Provincial Court of Manitoba. In 1978, he was asked to apply for an appointment to the Provincial Court of Alberta. He did so and shortly thereafter moved to Lethbridge. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Fred then accepted a 2-year appointment in Ottawa as a special advisor to help develop the former Young Offenders Act in 1981. He returned to Lethbridge in 1983 to resume his position in the Provincial Court of Alberta. Starting in 1997, Fred also travelled to the Northwest Territories a few times a year to supervise justices of the peace and develop an education program for them. From 1998 until his retirement from the bench in 2014, Fred worked as a supernumerary, covering when there was a surplus of work. He was often praised and admired for his keen knowledge of the law, fairness, compassion and integrity. He was known to be strict but fair and to be fastidious about courtroom decorum.
It wasn’t only about the law. Fred met and married Gail in 1963 and they celebrated 60 years of marriage. Together, they adopted and raised Bill and Beth and although Fred was older when he became a grandfather to Roshan and Arman, he participated with great enthusiasm. He often attended recitals and sports events and could frequently be heard proudly recounting one or the others achievements.
Fred and Gail travelled extensively all over the world but if he had his druthers, Fred would spend his downtime at the family cabin in Minaki, Ontario. He referred to the area as “God’s Country” and never tired of maintaining and improving the cottage, hosting friends on the deck overlooking the lake and finding innovative ways to keep the mosquitos at bay.
Fred had a keen mind, a fine sense of humour and was a consummate professional. He took his duties very seriously but always had time to laugh at himself. He will be dearly missed by Bill, Beth, Reza, Roshan, Arman and all those whose lives have been enriched by his presence.
A Celebration of Fred’s Life will be held at ST. AUGUSTINE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH – 411 11 Street South, Lethbridge, AB on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
