HIEBERT, Katherine HIEBERT Our mother and grandmother, KATHERINE “KATIE” HELEN HIEBERT, beloved wife of the late David “Dave” Hiebert, passed into the presence of her Lord at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Tuesday, March 17, 2026 at the age of 90 years, surrounded by all her loving family.
Mom was born to Henry and Elizabeth Schmidt on November 10, 1935 in Coaldale, Alberta. She attended school there until grade eight while also working on the family farm.
Her faith was most important to her and it was evident in all areas of her life. She accepted Christ at the age of 14 and told us often how He was forever faithful to
her.
Mom chose to attend Coaldale Bible School and after graduating from there, she moved to Calgary to pursue her dream of being an LPN. She chose well and loved working at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital until her retirement. The friendships she developed with her colleagues from 4B, the maternity and psychiatry units was something she treasured and talked of much.
In 1964, Mom married our Dad (David Hiebert) and they shared 61 years together – raising their two daughters, taking music to the hospitals and senior facilities for 49 years and welcoming nursing students and friends to their home regularly for Mom’s famous cooking which kept them busy and happy. In later years, the joy was spending time with their six grandchildren.
We will all sorely miss her laughter and wit, her ability to remember the details of all our lives and her spiritual wisdom – something so many others were also recipients of.
The family would like to thank all the staff of St Therese Villa and RN Leanne, who loved on Mom for the past two and a half years but especially since Dad’s passing. Thank you also to Mom’s special friends who were so faithful in phoning and visiting with her; she cherished you. Thank you also to the paramedics, Dr. Nikkel and Nick who helped Mom and walked with us during her final hours.
Mom is survived by her loving daughters, Grace (Martie) Dick and Carol (Trevor) Carroll; grandchildren: Caleb and Caden Dick; Levi, Ethan (Nelly), Abby and Isabella Carroll, sisters-in law, Elizabeth, Helen, and Esther; brothers-in-law Con (Ada), and Gary; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her best friend and husband David Hiebert just six weeks ago, her parents Henry and Elizabeth Schmidt, brother George and sisters, Frieda and Agnes as well as other family members.
A Funeral Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB, on Thursday, March 26, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor James Schneider officiating. The Funeral Service will be live-streamed and may be viewed through Katie’s obituary on the Cornerstone website.

TOEWS, Linda TOEWS 1929-2026 Linda Toews (née Shellenberg), formerly of Coaldale, passed away in Calgary on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 at the age of 96 after a lengthy illness.
Linda was born on May 21, 1929 in Herbert, Saskatchewan to Annie (née Wiebe) and Peter Shellenberg. She was the oldest of four children, and enjoyed a particularly close relationship with her sister Hilda. In 1941, her family moved to Coaldale, Alberta. After completing Grade 11, Linda joined the workforce until 1948, when she returned to Saskatchewan to attend Herbert Bible. In 1949, she came back to Coaldale, where she met and fell in love with Abram (Abe) Toews. She and Abe were married on January 8, 1950 and established a home on the farmyard they shared with Abe’s parents.
Although she had grown up in town, Linda embraced farm life and all that came with it. Over time, she and Abe added six children to their family. When she wasn’t busy caring for her family she enjoyed playing the piano, reading and quilting. She was an active member of the Coaldale Mennonite Brethren Church and faith was central to her life. In 1990 she and Abe sold their farm and moved to the town of Coaldale. Much of Linda’s retirement was spent lovingly supporting Abe during his battle with Alzheimer’s disease. After Abe’s death in 2003, Linda continued to live independently until 2012, when she moved into the Sunny South Lodge. In 2016 she moved to Calgary to be closer to her children.
Linda was predeceased by her husband Abe Toews and infant grandson Patrick Kesslering.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Lois (Duncan) Kesslering, Marilyn (Carl) Dahl, Lorraine Toews, Eldon (Lorraine) Toews, Orlando Toews, and Lynette Toews-Neufeldt (Colin Neufeldt); 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; siblings Hilda Redekopp, Harry Shellenberg, and Edna (Jake) Derksen; and in-laws John (Lillian) Toews.
