In the vibrant world of mixology, where the art of crafting the perfect cocktail can set the mood for any occasion, Spirits of the West Bartending School stands out for the experience and passion of its owner. Founded by the seasoned bartender and skilled instructor, Steven Wilkinson, his new business offers more than just a bartending course; it invites aspiring mixologists to immerse themselves in a comprehensive learning experience.
Wilkinson’s journey in bartending began in 1999, and since then he has not only honed his craft but also ignited a passion for teaching others. Dissatisfied with the educational approach he observed in the industry, which he felt sometimes overlooked or undermined the regulations of the province, Wilkinson embarked on a mission to create a class that did justice to the profession.
“In my years of experience, I’ve seen many approaches to bartending education, but I always felt something was missing. That’s why at Spirits of the West Bartending School, we’ve cultivated a course that encompasses everything from the foundational skills of mixology to a brief look at some of the provincial regulations, all at an affordable price point. Our goal is to equip our students with the knowledge and confidence they need to excel,” Wilkinson says.
Spirits of the West doesn’t merely scratch the surface! According to Wilkinson, “Over about 13 hours, you will learn all the basics of bartending, from crafting cocktails and martinis to mastering garnishes and simple syrup, alongside opening and closing procedures, resume building, and job hunting strategies.”
But what sets this school apart is its commitment to providing students with the tools they need from day one. Wilkinson adds, “Your tuition includes a 24-piece starter set. The starter set is a mixologist’s treasure chest, featuring essentials like a shaker glass and tin, strainer, stir spoon, shot glass, jigger, bottles, speed spouts, muddler, a plastic martini glass, and a comprehensive instruction manual. This isn’t just about learning, it’s about empowering you to perfect the skills you acquire with us in a small class or even a one-on-one setting.”
Wilkinson’s passion for bartending shines through not just in his teaching methods, but also in the additional resources he provides.
“I am also including a popular book of cocktail and shooter recipes, along with other valuable bartender’s tips. It’s crucial for our students to have access to a wide range of resources that inspire and guide them,” he says.
His dedication is evident in his promise to students, “You get an Instructor that has great knowledge, pride, and the skills to pass that knowledge and pride on to you.”
Recognizing the diverse needs of students, Spirits of the West offers three flexible ways to engage with the course material: online classes, in-home sessions in Wilkinson’s basement bar, and a Basics of Bartending class presented across ten chapters of YouTube videos (@SpiritsoftheWestBartending – content accessible with a code) available for purchase.
