With the balmy spring-like weather in Lethbridge and district the past while it is only natural one’s thoughts would turn to the Rocky Mountain Turf Club’s Spring horse racing schedule.
While racing doesn’t begin until May 9-10, true race fans have been spurred on by our taste of spring and are already gearing up for the season.
“I’m basically pleased with our Spring schedule, and the Fall schedule for that matter,” RMTC CEO Max Gibb said. “We should also see an improvement in our purse money, though at this time I can’t say to what extent that will be.
“We have 10 race days, over each Saturday and Sunday in May, then, come June, we’ll have three race days each weekend. July we’ll have our annual Millarville Meet July 1, which is a Wednesday and then we close out our Spring meet with racing at Whoop-Up Downs, the following Saturday and Sunday, July 4-5.”
The ponies will then head for Grande Prairie and return to Whoop-Up Downs for the RMTC Fall Meet, starting Sept. 5-7 through Oct. 9-12.
While Gibb is looking forward to the RMTC Spring Meet he is also looking ahead to the opening of Century Downs, the province’s new horse track at Balzac. The racino (racing/casino), with 750 slots and 34 gaming tables, opened its doors the last weekend in March and the track will be up and running the final weekend in April.
“The standardbreds will be running when the track first opens and the thoroughbreds and quarter-horses will begin racing in 2016,” said Gibb.
