Lethbridge Elks open season with a big bang

Carter Witbeck went five-for-five at the plate and the Lethbridge Elks scored six runs in the first inning en route to a 10-4 win over the Medicine Hat Monarchs Wednesday night at Spitz Stadium.
Witbeck added two RBIs and a run himself for the Elks, who were playing their home opener of the 2015 American Legion AA season.
Medicine Hat scored singles in each the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, but couldn’t capitalize on a bases-loaded situation in the ninth.
After plating their run on an Elks wild pitch with two outs that inning, the next batter grounded out to second on the very next pitch.
The Elks had 16 hits, including eight in their first-inning outburst, and committed three errors.
Their next home games will come on June 13, when they host the Helena Senators for a 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. doubleheader at Lloyd Nolan Yard.
