Back on the blades

The Lethbridge Speed Skating Association had a warmup in frigid temperatures last weekend.

The local club opened the long track season in Calgary at the Alberta Long Track Championships Saturday and Sunday.

Braving deep freeze temperatures, 11 members of the LSSA competed against over 210 skaters from Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Montana at the meet which will serve as the warm-up for the Jeremy Wortherspoon Open Long Track meet this weekend in Red Deer.

In Division 2 Zoe Wesseling placed 13th and Zosia Adelman skated to a 17th-place finish.

Denise Wesseling and Marie Cormier finished 20th and 33rd, respectively, in the T2T 11/12 Female category, while in the T2T 12/13 Male division Jonnathan McIntosh was fourth and Zak Adelman took 15th.

Mikka Eaves was 13th in the T2T 13/14 Female and Riley Vanderburgh skated to a 13th-place finish in the T2T 14/15 Male division. Mitchell Wesseling was 19th in the same division.

In the Open category, Jeff Peach took 16th in the 500m race and 17th in 1,000m.

Jasmine Belisle was in a trio of events, taking 23rd in 500m, eighth in 1,000m and 21st in 1,500m.

The Jeremy Wortherspoon Open Long Track Meet Saturday and Sunday will be a qualifier for the T2T skaters trying to earn a spot on Team Alberta for the Canadian Youth Long Track Championships.
