The University of Lethbridge rugby 7s took third.
Kicking off the opening weekend of the Canada West Sevens Series in Edmonton, the Pronghorns women’s rugby team defeated the UBC Thunderbirds 15-12 in the third-place game Sunday afternoon to complete a 3-2 weekend.
It was also payback after a 17-14 loss to the Thunderbirds in their third game of the weekend as Hailey Driscoll ran for all three tries for the Horns in the third-place game.
The Pronghorns started with two convincing wins Saturday, starting with a 36-0 win over the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades.
Sydney DeLaMare scored two tries for Lethbridge. Driscoll, Caitlin Sears, Janelle Agot and Abby Neudorf added one each.
Erin McFadden had two converts for the Pronghorns and Sears had one.
The Horns moved to 2-0 thanks to a 41-0 win over the UBCO Heat, powered by three tries from Rebecca Powell.
Abby Duguid, Genna Wright, Agot and Christina Norsten scored the other Lethbridge tries.
Agot added two converts and Sears kicked another.
But the Horns rounded out Saturday on a losing note as the Thunderbirds topped them 17-14.
Carolyn McKee and Wright scored tries for the Lethbridge. Sears converted both tries.
The Pronghorns were dealt another tough loss Sunday in the semfinal as the Victoria Vikes edged them 10-7.
Lethbridge led 7-0 after the first half on a try from McKee, but two second-half tries lifted the Vikes to victory and the final.
Victoria went 5-0 to capture first place in the first stop in the Canada West Sevens Series. The Alberta Pandas were 4-1 to place second.
The season resumes Feb. 1-2 with the second tournament in Vancouver, hosted by UBC.
