The Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame is calling for nominations for its 2020 induction ceremony to be held May 1.

The Sports Hall of Fame seeks to recognize athletes and builders from across the area, from athletes who have gone on to international success, to teams who have represented Lethbridge and area while competing against the rest of the country.

Anyone can nominate a deserving individual or team by visiting the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame website to download a nomination form. Nominations must be received by Jan. 31.

“The Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame is about recognizing the history and the stories of those who have committed their lives to sports in southern Alberta,” says Dave McMurray, Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame p-resident.

“The sports history of our city dates back to its earliest days, meaning there are countless stories to be recognized, along with new chapters to be written. We encourage everyone to put forward nominees who help us build on that legacy.”

Nominations can be made in one of four categories:

– Athlete: Recognizing those who have distinguished themselves in competition in Lethbridge or elsewhere over a prolonged period at the provincial, national, international or professional level.

– Team: Recognizing Lethbridge-based teams that have won a national, international or world championship, or have achieved the highest possible award at their level of competition.

– Builder: To formally recognize the initiative, leadership and dedication of those individuals who participate in the development of sport.

– Special award: Recognizing individuals and/or organizations that have made an outstanding and valuable contribution to sports or to the community of Lethbridge through sports. This category is to reward those who have made these significant contributions but do not qualify under the other categories.

The Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame has inducted more than 320 members since its formation in 1985 as part of the City of Lethbridge’s Centennial celebrations. The mandate of the hall is to identify and honour not only contemporary individuals, but also those who have excelled in sport at some time since the founding of Lethbridge.

The 2020 induction banquet will take place on Friday, May 1. Learn more at lethbridgesportshalloffame.ca.
