The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns swim team won’t be qualifying any more athletes for the U SPORTS Championships, but it was still a strong outing for the team in another warmup for the national championship.

The Horns were in Regina last weekend for the Colleges Cup, getting in a few more laps before the U SPORTS Championships Feb. 21-23 in Victoria, hosted by the University of Victoria Vikes.

Despite not adding any new qualifiers for the nationals, Pronghorns swimmers had a successful meet with some first-year swimmers pressed into new spots.

Aiden Godwin led the men’s side, counting for 24 points and placing second in the 100m breaststroke.

Tom Utas was third in the 50m free and Raine Arden just missed a top-three finish in the 400m freestyle.

Freshman Samuel Pauch-Nolan had his best meet as a Horn, scoring personal-best times in both the 100 and 200m butterfly.

The Pronghorns men’s relay team finished second in the 400m freestyle relay.

For the women, without Tricia Fair due to injury, the first-year Pronghorns had to move into new relay spots and lead the team’s scoring.

Ali Beck paced the Horns with 12 points and a third-place finish in 800m freestyle.

Four of eight spots on the top relay teams were swam by rookies and saw the Pronghorns finish fifth in the 4x100m freestyle relay.

Emilia Hesterman was sixth in the 50m butterfly, while Adrienne Foscolos was eight in the 100m breaststroke.
