The Coaldale Copperheads opening round, best-of-five Heritage Junior Hockey League series with the High River Flyers will come down to one game.
Needing a win to stay alive, the Flyers did just that in Game 4 Sunday night in High River with a 4-3 overtime win to force Game 5 Wednesday night at the Coaldale Sportsplex at 8 p.m.
On Sunday night, Ty Abbott and Brandyn Howg scored in the third to erase a 3-1 deficit and force overtime, but High River’s Sean Burns kept the Flyers alive and forced Game 5 with the winner 16:52 into overtime.
Ethan Klemen scored the other Coaldale goal and he and Howg each added an assist for a two-point game.
Copperheads goaltender Brett Vanderveer stopped 27 of 31 shots in the overtime loss.
Coaldale went up 2-1 in the series with a 2-1 win Saturday night at the Coaldale Sportsplex.
Mason Sande scored in the first period for the Copperheads and Bexte added the game-winner on the power play midway through the third.
Vanderveer made 28 saves.
The Flyers won Game 2 5-2 Friday night in High River.
The teams were tied 2-2 after the second period before High River scored three goals in the third to earn the home win and tie the series.
Sande scored both Copperheads goals, while Vanderveer stopped 26 of 31 shots.
The Copperheads won Game 1 5-2 Thursday night in Coaldale.
The home side snapped a 2-2 tie after 40 minutes with a trio of goals in the third period from James Halverson, Tyler Strath and Tyler Anderson, into a empty net.
Bexte and Clayton Nevil scored in the first period for the Copperheads.
Bexte added an assist for two points, while Thomas Johnson and Klemen each had two assists.
Vanderveer made 25 saves.
