The Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) has decided to delay its season debut until late June, at the earliest, due to concerns over COVID-19. The league’s board of governors remains hopeful a partial season can still be played, according to a press release.
“We know our talented players want to play and we know the communities are looking for positive, family friendly activities to return. We are embracing that role, whenever that green light is turned on,” said Kevin Kvame, WCBL president.
The WCBL said all decisions about playing any portion of the season will be dependent on guidance and approval from local and provincial governments and health officials.
“The health and safety of our players, coaches, officials and fans are paramount in all of our decision making and we will not be doing anything that is not in accordance with the public health authorities,” said Kvame.
The league said they are working on a legacy project that will allow its teams to show community pride when they return to action. The league hopes this will be a joint project of the federal, provincial and local governments, along with industry stakeholders, but did not provide details.
The WCBL is a collegiate summer baseball league made up of 10 teams in Alberta and Saskatchewan. It has existed in various forms since the 1930s.
