O’Donnell in contention at Alberta Mid-Amateur

Lethbridge’s Ryan O’Donnell finds himself near the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the Alberta Men’s Mid-Amateur Golf Championship Tuesday in Sundre.

O’Donnell carded a two-under 69 as the three-day event began. The member of the Lethbridge Country Club shot a 35 on the front nine, bogeying the fifth hole before responding with a birdie on the seventh.

O’Donnell opened the back nine with a birdie on the 10th hole and added another on the 17th.

Ryan Swelin shot a four-under 67 for the first-round lead, with three golfers tied one shot back.

Byron Whitford of the Picture Butte Golf Club is also in the field, shooting 83 and tied for 96th.
