The Lethbridge Hurricanes will settle for two out of three over the Red Deer Rebels.
Playing in Game 3 of their weekend series, the Canes fell 5-1 to the Rebels in Western Hockey League play Sunday night in Red Deer.
After wins on Friday and Saturday that were powered largely by special teams, those special teams turned on the visitors in Sunday’s weekend finale as the Rebels scored two shorthanded goals courtesy Josh Tarzwell and Ben King on the same infraction to snap a 1-1 tie and take a 3-1 lead en route to a Red Deer win.
The loss drops the Hurricanes to 2-3-0-0, while the Rebels improve to 2-3-2-0.
In keeping with the special teams theme, the Hurricanes lone goal was a man advantage tally from Logan Barlage — his first of the season — to give Lethbridge seven power play goals on the weekend, going 7-for-18 on the weekend and 1-for-9 Sunday.
After lighting each other up in the first period of the first two games of the weekend, the Rebels and Hurricanes skated through a scoreless first period Sunday night.
Tarzwell got things going 1:12 into the second on a power play goal, but the Hurricanes pulled even nearly seven minutes later on Barlage’s man advantage goal.
The Hurricanes had the chance to take the lead late in the second when Red Deer’s Keaton Sorensen was whistled down for hooking, but the Rebels drained two shorties, starting with Tarzwell at 15:41 and King on a breakaway at 17:22.
Arshdeep Bains — on the power play — and Jace Isley rounded out the scoring in the third as the Rebels went 2-for-5 on the man advantage.
King added two assists for a three-point and Tarzwell also enjoyed a three-point outing, adding an assist to his pair of goals.
Chris Douglas added a pair of helpers for Red Deer and Bains also had an assist for the Rebels for two points.
Hurricanes goaltender Carl Tetachuk stopped 30 of 35 shots, while at the other end, Claresholm’s Byron Fancy turned aside 27 of 28 shots to post the win for the Rebels, who outshot the Hurricanes 35-28.
The Hurricanes return to action this weekend with a three-game set against the Calgary Hitmen.
The first game goes Friday night in Lethbridge at 7 p.m. before heading to Calgary Saturday at 7 p.m.
The weekend wraps up Sunday back at the Enmax Centre at 6 p.m.
