Now that’s a glowing endorsement.
The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s basketball team announced the newest addition to their roster with the signing of Australian Alec Hillman Tuesday afternoon.
When assessing his newest player, Pronghorns head coach Jermaine Small referenced another Horn who made a nice career for himself in U of L silks.
“He kind of has a bit of Zac Overwater to him,” said Small of the five-year Pronghorn from Didsbury.
“He’s got the size, but the skill. He’s a legit six-seven, strong, can shoot the three and play inside. So I think he’s going to be a really good addition. As soon as I saw him play he reminded me of Zac. In terms of playing style and size, he’s very similar.”
Hillman last played for the Olds College Broncos of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.
“I wanted to add some guys with experience,” said Small. “He’s a big, strong kid. He plays the power forward position, but you can put him in a couple of positions.”
Small first saw Hillman last year.
“We just kept talking and building a relationship. He had a couple other schools recruiting him, but he decided this would be the best place for him.”
Small said his newest recruit was happy to call southern Alberta the next stop in his student/athlete career.
“He’s ecstatic,” said Small. “He sees the vision I’m trying to create here. He has two years left (of eligibility), so he wants to come in and win right away and help the younger guys.”
As some of the COVID-19 restrictions ease, the local members of the Horns have been back on the court at the 1st Choice Savings Centre, ideally building up for a return to Canada West action in the fall.
“For the guys that are in town, we’ve been back on the court and training and lifting weights four times a week,” said Small. “It’s really nice to be back and just to see the guys and laugh with them and try to keep growing this thing.”
Small said in the meantime he’s looking at a few more potential recruits.
“We’ll just continue to build and make sure we’re ready come the fall.”
