Some late offence wasn’t enough for a comeback win for the Lethbridge Bulls.
A surrendered seven-run inning also put them behind the eight ball.
The Bulls were downed 9-6 by the Okotoks Red Dawgs in Western Canadian Baseball League play Sunday afternoon in Okotoks.
Looking to start the season at 2-0 following a 14-7 win over the Okotoks Black Dawgs Friday night at Spitz Stadium, the Bulls gave up a seven-run sixth inning that allowed Okotoks to blow open a 2-0 lead and move up 9-0.
The Bulls battled back with two runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to pull within three, but their comeback bid fell just short as Lethbridge moves to 1-1 on the season.
Hitting one-two in the lineup for the Bulls, shortstop Mike Fitzsimmons was 2-for-5 with one run scored and designated hitter Noah Or hit 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI.
Lethbridge catcher Ty Wever batted 2-for-4 with one run scored and first baseman Torrin Vaselenak was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Bulls starting pitcher Flynn Ridley got the start and took the loss, throwing four innings and allowing two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out three.
Okotoks starter Graham Brunner earned the win for the Dawgs, going five innings, giving up no runs and allowing two hits. He walked two batters and struck out six.
The Bulls outhit the Dawgs 9-6. Each team had two errors.
The Bulls and Red Dawgs are at Spitz Stadium Wednesday night for the rematch at 7:05 p.m.
Lethbridge is back in Okotoks Friday night when they take on the Black Dawgs.
On Monday night at Spitz Stadium, the Bulls held the Tanner Craswell/Mitch MacLean Memorial Game, facing the Vauxhall Academy of Baseball Jets.
The Jets came away with the win in the 2021 TCMM game thanks to a 10-5 win over the Bulls.
In honour of the duo who died in 2011, the Bulls play without a shortstop and a second baseman in honour of the middle infielders for the first batter.
