Two local names are headed to the Summer Olympic Games.
Rugby Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee announced Friday Canada’s rugby sevens teams nominated to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Named to Team Canada’s 13-player roster for the women’s team is University of Lethbridge Pronghorns alumnus Kayla Moleschi as well as Vulcan’s Keyara Wardley.
Moleschi, 30, who originally hails from Williams Lake, B.C., played for the Pronghorns in 2011, winning the Canada West Championship in addition to being named to the CIS All-Canadian Team and the Canada West Rookie of the Year.
Moleschi was a member of Team Canada at Rio 2016 where she scored three tries, helping Canada win bronze in the first ever Olympic rugby sevens tournament, and was named the 2016 Women’s Sevens Player of the Year by Rugby Canada.
Wardley, 21, made her debut with the senior Canadian Sevens team at the Kitakyushu stop of the 2019 Sevens Series.
She has been centralized with the national sevens program since 2017.
Canada’s men’s and women’s sevens teams last competed this past April in Dubai.
Men’s rugby sevens will take place July 26 to July 28 and women’s rugby sevens is slated for July 29 to July 31. Both tournaments will be played at the Tokyo Stadium.
Both the men’s and women’s Olympic tournaments begin with the 12 teams divided into three pools of four for a preliminary round-robin. The top eight teams advance to the knockout stage, beginning with the quarterfinals.
