A pair of southern Alberta golfers enjoyed a high placing at the Alberta Mens Amateur Championship in Calgary.
In fact, they tied for third as Pincher Creek product and Lethbridge Country Club member Ethan Choi and Paxton Maxwell of the Magrath Golf Club each shot three-under 207 as the three-day event wrapped up Thursday afternoon at the The Calgary Golf and Country Club.
Choi shot 69 the opening day Tuesday and followed that up with a score of 71 Wednesday and 67 Thursday to crack the top-three.
Maxwell shot 71 on Tuesday and Thursday and 65 on Wednesday to share third place with Choi.
On Thursday, Choi got off to a quick start on the front nine with four birdies and a 31 at the turn, but bogeys on three of the final four holes gave him a back-nine 36 as he finished two strokes behind winner Braden O’Grady of the Blackhawk Golf Club, who finished with a three-day 205.
Second-place finisher Kai Iguchi finished one shot ahead with a 206.
Maxwell shot 36 on the front nine with bogeys on the first and eighth holes and a birdie on the seventh.
He cut one shot off that total on the back nine with a 35 with two birdies and two bogeys.
Maxwell headed into the Amateur championship fresh off winning the Junior Boys division at the MJT Humber College PGM Classic in Banff last Wednesday and Thursday.
Darin Bertschi of the Picture Butte Golf Club shot scores of 81, 70 and 73 for a total of 224, good for a tie for 39th.
