Gulls take flight against the Bulls

In the race for second place in the Western Canadian Baseball League, the Sylvan Lake Gulls came out flying Thursday night.

The Gulls blanked the Lethbridge Bulls 14-0 in league play Thursday night at Spitz Stadium.

In the first of our games the teams will play against each other to wrap up the regular season and decide second place, the Gulls opened up a 2-0 lead after the second inning and then added another five runs in the fourth and fifth innings en route to the shutout win that improves them to 20-17 and drops the Bulls to 19-18 and into third place in the WCBL, one game back of the Gulls, who have now won four in a row.

The four-game set resumes tonight at Spitz Stadium at 7:05 p.m.

The Bulls were outhit 10-4 with second baseman Kalem Haney registering two of those hits, going 2-for-2.

For the Gulls, Matt Bondarchuk was 3-for-6 with one run scored and two RBI.

Nolan Weger was 2-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI and Logan Grant was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI.

Kyle Froelich also had two RBI for Sylvan Lake.

Jake Anderson was tagged for the loss for the Bulls, throwing three innings and giving up two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out four.

Jared Arnold took the win for the Gulls, going four innings and allowing no runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out four.

After tonight’s game, the teams head to Sylvan Lake this weekend to wrap up the series and the regular season.

Saturday’s game is at 7:05 p.m. with Sunday’s game slated for 2:05 p.m.
