After hosting a series of rugby clinics over the summer, University of Lethbridge Pronghorn Savanna Collison will be helping host more this fall.
This time, she’s teaming up with former University of Lethbridge Pronghorn and rugby 7s Olympic bronze medalist Ashley Steacy as well as Collison’s current Pronghorns teammate Abby Duguid for a flag rugby program starting next week.
“With Ashley going into her new role with Rugby Alberta she’s developed this program called Mini Girls Wolf Pack and we’re looking to get some girls out to play flag rugby in Lethbridge,” said Collison, who ran rugby summer clinics alongside fellow Horns teammate Keegan Brantner as Youth Development Coordinators for the Junior Rugby Alberta Association.
“She selected myself and Abby and we’ll be spearing the program in Lethbridge. Hopefully we get the numbers up so we can have a great fall program.”
The program will run Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27 and Nov. 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Orion Sports Group located at 212049 Township Road 81A for girls aged 9-12.
The registration fee is $85.
“The more the merrier, as many as we can get,” said Collison.
Flag rugby is the between stage of contact and touch rugby, said Collison.
“So it adds a bit more agility to playing because there are flags, but it keeps everyone safe because there is no contact. We just want to get them out, having fun and using an inclusive way to introduce young girls to the fundamental skills of rugby and give girls the best experience possible to enjoy playing rugby.”
