Swimming has made a splash as the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns athletics announced its Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week Tuesday.
Winning this Male Athlete of the Week award was Pronghorns swimmer Apollo Hess, while graduating Horns women’s soccer goaltender Erin Gill takes home the Female Athlete of the Week award.
Opening the season with the LASC Fall Challenge last weekend, Hess broke a pair of school records after losing the 2020 season to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hess opened the meet breaking a 19-year-old record in the 200m IM, a record previously held by Gerard Hunter.
He then broke the 100m IM record that was held by Ryan Thornley, set in 2013 and tied another Pronghorn record held by Joel Robinson that was set in 2017.
Currently, Hess is ranked first in Canada in the 50m breaststroke.
Hess and the Pronghorns swim team will head to Calgary this weekend for the Dinos Cup.
The Canada West Championships will be hosted by the University of Alberta Nov. 26 to 28.
Playing in her final games as a Pronghorn, Gill backstopped the Pronghorns to a great final weekend of the season, earning four points in two games versus the Mount Royal Cougars at the University of Lethbridge Stadium.
In Saturday’s 2-2 tie with the Cougars, Gill made seven saves to preserve the single point and then followed up that with a six-save performance to secure a 2-1 win in the season finale.
Wrapping up her University career, Gill finished the season with 53 saves in seven games, which placed her eighth among all goalies in Canada West.
