Rams and Comets part of a big football night

By Lethbridge Herald on November 5, 2021.

A storied high school football rivalry will take place under the lights tonight in a postseason atmosphere.

The Raymond Comets and the LCI Rams lock horns in the Tier I South Zone Championship at 7 p.m. at the University of Lethbridge Stadium.

It’s the second time the two rivals have met this season, the Rams won the last meeting, posting a 28-7 win in a non-league game Sept. 25 at Comet Stadium in Raymond.

In Medicine Hat tonight, the Cardston Cougars take on the Medicine Hat High Hawks at 6 p.m. at Methanex Bowl.

Cardston is the Tier II representative for the Southern Alberta High School Football League after defeating the Chinook Coyotes 14-0 last Friday in Cardston.

The winner of tonight’s game will be the Region 1 rep in the Alberta Schools Athletic Association football provincials.

The Rams come off a bye weekend and ranked second in the Football Alberta Tier I division at 7-1.

The 4-4 Comets are ranked seventh in Tier I and are coming off a 52-7 win over Foothills.

At 4-3-1, Cardston is ranked fourth in Tier II.

Medicine Hat (9-2) is one spot up in third.

Also tonight, the Taber W.R. Myers Rebels host the Claresholm Willow Creek Cobras at 7 p.m. in the Tier IV final.

Both teams go to provincials, but the winner of this weekend’s game gets a home game with the loser going on the road.

Last year the ASAA announced the creation of an upper level of Tier I playoffs named the Brian Fryer Tier I Division after the long-time former Football Alberta Executive Director and Canadian Football Hall of Famer.

This pulls the top-four Tier I teams out of the traditional regional representation Tier I Playoffs and has them playoff similar to the college football playoffs in the NCAA.

For the first time qualifying for provincials at any level will be based on rankings from a committee rather than regional representation, which is still in place for all four Tiers of 12-Man football.
