The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s and women’s basketball teams were handed losses by the Alberta Pandas and Golden Bears in Canada West action Friday night in Edmonton.
In the women’s game, the Horns fell to 0-3 on the season with a 75-62 loss, while the men were defeated 84-66 by the Golden Bears to sit at 1-2 on the season.
In the women’s game, the teams were tied 16-16 after the first quarter before the Pronghorns pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring the Pandas 19-9 for a 35-25 lead.
But the Pandas responded with a strong third quarter, outscoring the Horns 26-7 before adding another 24 in the fourth quarter to round out the win.
Jessica Haenni paced the Pronghorns with 20 points, while Savannah McMahon added 12.
Makenna Ledgister also hit double digits for the Horns with 10 points.
The Pronghorns shot 37.3 per cent from the field, 21.7 per cent from the three-point line and 87.5 per cent on free throws.
In the men’s game, the Pronghorns held a 38-37 lead at the half before a 31-point third quarter vaulted the Golden Bears to the lead and the win.
Jeff Rodehutskors had 17 points for the Pronghorns, Shae Gibb hit for 13 and DeAndrae Pierre added 12.
The Pronghorns shot 42.4 per cent from the field, 27.8 from beyond the arc and 64.7 on free throws.
The teams wrap up their weekend series tonight.
The women’s game goes at 5 p.m. with the men to follow at 7 p.m.
