By Lethbridge Herald on November 9, 2021.

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s and women’s basketball teams went winless in Edmonton last weekend in Canada West play against the Pandas and the Golden Bears.

The Horns men were topped 82-73 by the Golden Bears Saturday after an 84-66 loss Friday that puts Lethbridge at 1-3 on the season.

On the women’s side, the Pronghorns lost a close 59-51 decision to the Pandas Saturday after losing 75-62 Friday.

On Saturday in the men’s game, the Golden Bears held a 45-33 lead at the half on their way to the win and a 2-0 start to the season.

Alberta had to hold on as the Pronghorns pushed back in the third quarter, outscoring the Golden Bears 24-17, but the hosts still managed to post the nine-point win.

De’Andrae Pierre and Moreau Darlington each had 15 points for the Pronghorns, while Chad Oviatt had the double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Pierre also had four assists.

Jeff Rodehutskors chipped in with 12 points for the Horns.

The Pronghorns shot 46.6 per cent from the field and 32 per cent from the three-point line. They were also 11-16 (68.8 per cent) on free throws.

On the women’s side, the Horns are still in search of their first win of the season, but kept it close with the Pandas Saturday night.

Down two points heading into the fourth quarter, the Pronghorns were held to just nine points as the Pandas salted the win.

Lethbridge hit 33 per cent from the floor, while the Pandas shot a bit better at 35 per cent.

Jessica Haenni was the only Pronghorn to shoot double digits with 14 points. She also had three steals on the night.

Jessica Zarowny and Isabel Rattai each grabbed eight rebounds.

The Pronghorns women get the next two weeks off before a conference wide week off.

They return to the court Nov. 26 and 27 when they travel to Calgary to face the Mount Royal Cougars.

The Horns men are also off for two weeks with the bye and conference week off before facing the Cougars, but will head to Moose Jaw Friday to play the Saskatchewan Huskies in a non-conference game.

The Pronghorns return home Dec. 3-4 when the MacEwan University Griffins come to the 1st Choice Savings Centre.
