The Coaldale Copperheads winning streak came to an end last weekend, but not before a win over the top team in the Heritage Junior Hockey League Southern Division.
The Copperheads topped the South-leading Okotoks Bisons 5-2 Saturday night at the Coaldale Sportsplex for their eighth win in a row.
But the Copperheads streak came to an end Sunday in a 3-1 loss to the Strathmore Wheatland Kings in Strathmore.
The 1-1 weekend puts the Copperheads at 13-7-1, good for third place in the Southern Division, one point back of the 13-5-2 Medicine Hat Cubs, but still 12 points back of the 19-2-1 Bisons.
On Saturday against the Bisons, the Copperheads scored twice each in the first and second periods for a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes on their way to handing Okotoks only their second regulation loss of the season.
Thomas Johnson and Dallas Bodnar scored in the first period for Coaldale and Brandon Creighton and Brogan Booth added second period markers.
Kole Fujita rounded out the scoring for the Copperheads in the third.
Creighton, Johnson and Booth added an assist each for a two-point night.
Koden Lazar added two helpers for Coaldale, while goaltender Ethan Barrows made 31 saves in the win.
On Sunday in Strathmore, Johnson scored in the first period for the Copperheads for a 1-0 lead after the first period, but the Wheatland Kings scored twice in the second period and once in the third to post the win.
Logan Leroux stopped 30 of 33 shots in the loss.
The Copperheads are in Okotoks Friday night for the rematch at 8 p.m. and return to the Coaldale Sportsplex Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. when the Red Deer Vipers pay a visit.
