Two members of the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns have earned Canada West Player of the Week honours for their performances in the respective sports last weekend.
After his multiple-medal performance at the Canada West Championship last weekend in Edmonton, Apollo Hess was named the West Male Swimmer of the Week Wednesday.
Hess was named the Men’s Swimmer of the Meet and the Men’s Rookie of the Meet after winning five medals at the championship.
On the basketball court, fourth-year forward Haily Weaver wasn announced as the conference’s Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Tuesday, helping the Pronghorns to a 2-0 weekend over the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary.
Hess won gold in record breaking fashion in both the 50m and 200m breaststroke. The first-year swimmer also took home silver in both the 100m breaststroke and 4x100m freestyle relay, and added a bronze in the 4x100m medley.
In Calgary Friday and Saturday, Weaver’s back-to-back double-doubles helped the Pronghorns to their first two wins this season as Lethbridge swept the Mount Royal Cougars to improve to 2-4.
Weaver opened the weekend with a 13-point, 12-rebound performance.
Weaver scored 24 points and hauled in another 11 rebounds to go along with four steals and a pair of assists in a 74-48 Lethbridge victory Saturday that moved the Pronghorns up third in the Central Division.
The two double-doubles were the first and second of the season for Weaver.
On the season, she is averaging 9.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
Weaver and the Pronghorn basketball teams host the MacEwan Griffins Friday and Saturday at the 1st Choice Savings Centre to wrap up the first semester of the Canada West season.
The women’s game is at 6 p.m. Friday with the men following at 8 p.m.
The games start Saturday with the women’s game at 5 p.m. and the men at 7 p.m.
