Kodiaks basketball returns home this weekend

After starting the 2022 portion of their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference seasons off on a winning note last weekend, the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s and women’s basketball teams are back on home court this weekend.

The Kodiaks entertain the Briercrest Clippers tonight and Saturday afternoon at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium.

Meanwhile, the Kodiaks men’s volleyball team is off to Caronport, Sask. tonight and Saturday to take on the Clippers.

Due to COVID-19 concerns on the Clippers women’s volleyball team, the women’s games are postponed and will be made up at a later date.

On the basketball court, the 5-2 men’s team faces the 1-5 Clippers at 6 p.m. tonight with the women to follow at 8 p.m.

The teams are back at it Saturday afternoon with the men’s game at 1 p.m. and the women at 3 p.m.

The Kodiaks men are coming off an impressive 83-65 win over the SAIT Trojans Saturday night.

Veteran guard Orin Porter is averaging 17.4 points per game and Chris Schlauwitz drained 21 points against SAIT for a career-best performance.

The 6-1 Kodiaks women handed the Trojans their first loss of the season thanks to a 58-44 win Saturday, tying the teams for first in the ACAC South Division.

The cousin duo of fourth-year Kirsten Barwegen and rookie Courtney Deemter continue to pace the offence, while Annah Westrop grabbed 13 rebounds on Saturday.

The Kodiaks men’s volleyball team returns to the court for their first game of 2022 after their match against the Trojans last Friday was postponed.

The 4-2 Kodiaks ride a four-game winning streak into the second half and will have a big test against the 6-0 Clippers.

Second-year Kodiak Nolan Moes has 12 service aces in six games, while Jackson Gaehring leads the team with 48 kills.

Jeremiah Bohnert is second in the conference in 1.1 blocks per set.
