The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns rugby team has started the 7s season in fifth.
The Horns opened the Canada West Sevens Series in Edmonton at the Alberta tournament Saturday.
After opening the weekend with four losses, the Pronghorns wrapped up preliminary play on a winning note thanks to a 26-12 win over the Trinity Western Spartans to finish 1-4.
The Pronghorns were awarded fifth place after Trinity Western was forced to forfeit the fifth-place game due to injuries.
“We are grateful to be playing in what has been a challenging few weeks,” said Pronghorns’ head coach Graeme Moffat in a statement.
“We were disappointed with how we played on day one and know we can perform better.
“We had eight girls make their sevens debut which is pleasing, but we have some work to do over the next three weeks in preparation for Victoria and we are looking forward to the opportunity to compete again.”
The Pronghorns started the weekend with a 38-7 loss to the UBC Thunderbirds.
Ruby McCrae scored the lone Pronghorns try and kicked the convert.
The Horns fell 40-5 to the Victoria Vikes in their second game as Gwen Fillinger hit for Lethbridge’s try.
The Pronghorns kept it closer in their third game of the weekend, but were topped 22-14 by the University of Alberta Pandas.
Sofia Hoff – on a convert from McRae – and Tory Clements scored the Pronghorns tries.
Hoff kicked the second convert for Lethbridge.
The Pronghorns were defeated 24-14 by the Calgary Dinos to fall to 0-4.
Rebecca Powell and Sara Cline scored the Horns tries. McRae kicked both converts.
But the Pronghorns managed to wrap up the preliminary portion of the weekend on a winning note courtesy a 26-12 win over Trinity Western.
Samantha Ganske and Powell scored the first two Pronghorns tries.
Powell added her second try of the game in the second half and Marguerite Medwid ran for another second half score for Lethbridge.
Hoff kicked two converts and McRae added another.
The Canada West Sevens Series continues Feb. 12-13 in Victoria.
